1040 Backup-Do you need hard copies?

If you scan all the information for your 1040 and NJ taxes and have the copies securely in the cloud (husband's a security techie), do you need to keep hard copies of everything too?

If IRS decides to audit your return, you are going to need to send them copies of all your back-up documents.  Not sure they will accept electronic copies since these can be doctored.  I would check before you discard these.

They'll be accepted. Many documents from issuers are electronic copies such as bank statements, stock trades, 1099's, health insurance, medical, etc.

When you order something online that is deductible you end up with a PDF invoice, an electronic copy.

I was once "questioned." It was resolved by my mailing a computer printed copy.
