 Wait, it's anonymous?

This is pretty crazy.  This - plus the Fear book - what will Trump do to steer the news elsewhere?  We will see.

Yes - anonymous - but a White House Official.  So, it adds a level of credibility.

This is pretty remarkable:

"The Times today is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay. We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers."

I'm not really sure this was a wise thing for the Times to do.  It opens them up to accusations of running a false attack piece against the president.

The NYT knows who the  author is but is publishing the Op-Ed anonymously at the request of the author whose job would otherwise be in jeopardy.

"To be clear, ours is not the popular “resistance” of the left. We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous.

But we believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.

That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.

The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making."

First, everyone will deny writing it. Then, everyone will claim writing it.

Who is it?  Kellyanne?

I'm leaning toward the David Frum argument:

Speak in your own name. Resign in a way that will count. Present the evidence that will justify an invocation of the 25th Amendment, or an impeachment, or at the very least, the first necessary step toward either outcome, a Democratic Congress after the November elections.

Points I got from the op-ed:

1. Trump is nuts.

2. He's everybody's fault.

3. Conservatism is still the best!

4. Please don't vote out the Republican majority from the House we're not all bad like him.

My cynical reaction to this is that it's someone who recognizes that having Trump as the head of their party endangers Republican control of the government in the near and long-term. This is a somewhat cowardly way of trying to distance mainstream conservatives from our lunatic in chief.

This could be someone working at one of the departments or agencies, not necessarily someone at the White House. It's also not clear if this person was appointed by Trump, Obama or Bush though the person does refer to Trump appointees trying to thwart his policies.

Mike Pence is such a scamp ...

Not likely an Obama appointee. They praise the tax "reform" for instance. And this little Valentine to the GOP: "Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people."

This irks me the more I ponder it. It's basically saying "thank heaven for us principled conservatives working to thwart our mad emperor from behind the scenes! We've been able to accomplish great things despite how awful he is! And everyone is to blame for his ascension and adopting his tone! Yay Repiblicanism!"

Where was this weenie when Trump was taking over their party in 2016? Now they're scuttling around like a ray behind the baseboards claiming to be the heroes of a story where almost everyone else is the villain.

Of course John Kelly has the most access, and as a military man may feel a sense of duty and would have credibility with the Times.

Sen. Bob Corker says:

"So what else is new"?

The NY Times says they know the identity of the author. Would they print this if the author was not a high official and credible?

"Senior administration official" describes hundreds if not thousands of people. I doubt it's a cabinet member or someone directly in the West Wing, though it's possible.

It is a little comforting to think that there are insiders trying to thwart Trump. Then again, every administration has people who believe that the sitting president isn't particularly competent, though certainly not to this extreme.

Ari Melber on MSNBC has the retired Executive Editor of the Times on the phone. He says it is unprecedented for the paper to do something like this.

The reports are that Trump is going ballistic.

Do you think he'll demand the special counsel be redirected to investigate who wrote the piece?

 Surprised?

His sickness cannot handle this.

i think trump wrote this so he could diva it up, and distract from that milquetoast Kavanaugh. And he likes to phone in stuff about himself pretending not to be himself. Besides, it distracts from Woodward's book.

Trump is not capable of writing that opinion piece.
