Boiler: Water Hammer

Last night we started hearing the pipes banging and hissing sounds as a result of us turning on our boiler.  We did have our boiler serviced last month, so we know it's in good shape.  Can anyone recommend either:

1. a home solution to eliminate the water hammering or

2. someone who is an expert at assessing and fixing this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Is this a steam system ? Is this the first time you are using it ? Assuming steam, first check to make sure the water level is not too high in the boiler. There should be a sight glass on the front of it with  high and low water marks, the water level should be in the middle.

Yes, it is a steam system.  It was serviced last month and has been used sparingly since.  I'll double check tonight that the water isn't too high.  I'm familiar with the sight glass.  We have it marked where the water level should be.

Thanks for your response.

Hissing comes with steam systems, although it can be quieter if the vents are properly balanced. Banging usually comes from wet steam or lines that are not pitched correctly.

These books are great:
