Can I use SUV for road test today?

So, when I moved here 2 years ago I got my learner's permit and then work got crazy and I never took driving lessons until this month. I have my test scheduled for today and was reading the permit to see what documents I need to bring with me and noticed that it said the instructor needs access to the brake, or a hand brake and that minivans are not allowed for road tests. We have an SUV with a console and no hand brake. My driving teacher asked me several times what kind of car I was taking the test in and never once mentioned a restriction. My husband, who has been driving for 30 years said it never occured to him that they would restrict the type of car you can use for the test.

So, has anyone been turned away for having the wrong kind of vehicle at the test? Do they have other cars there for people who arrive with the wrong kind

You must bring a car that has a hand brake in the center console. If you don't have one, you have to borrow one or hire an instructor with the appropriate car to take you to the road test. They do not have cars at the site for you to use.

Thanks shoshanna. I really should have read the permit sooner

The Boy was turned away with our older model Mercury because the female agent couldn't reach the brake pedal (from the bench seat). Was allowed to (attempt a ) roadtest with another taller agent, who rejected his written test results, as they were taken before he turned 18. We may have to rent a car from a driving school, as they also have restrictions on regular rental agency cars.

This doesn't make any sense. All the kids take their written test before age 18. How could they not? The legal age for a driver's license in NJ is 17.

You don't technically "rent" a car from a driving school. You hire a driving instructor to take you to the road test site, then the student uses the car for the test.

For each of our kids, we paid for the test service with their driving school (Don Tre.) The instructor picked up several kids to go together. As they drove to the test center (s)he reviewed them on what to expect and what to remember when doing the test and the car was provided for them to take it in. No parent had to accompany them. I don't remember the cost, but it was worth every penny!

It's BS, shoshannah. The written test that he took at CHS was good for the permit we got him shortly after he turned 17; however, by the time he finally spent enough time behind the wheel to feel secure enough to take the test, he had turned 18. The scorecard is stamped on the reverse side with something to the effect of 'these results expire at age 18." The whole point of the written test is to get the permit, which is valid for 2 years. Why did he have to re-take a written test if he had a valid permit? BS, I tell you!

Thanks for clarifying the driving school vehicle thing.

a regular car rental agency wouldn't allow the car to be used by a teen....even with a license....i doubt they would allow an adult on a permit...

I don't think it's possible to include a driver with a permit on a rental car contract.

We always used a driving school for at least some lessons (did a lot of permit practice driving with our kids as well) and then had the driving instructor take them for the road test using the school's car.
