Can you identify please?

That looks like Hollyhock. I've tried planting them the past two years and have had no luck with them.

Yep, hollyhock. something which requires a cold winter, so I can't grow it. Sigh.

Thank you all. Why is it hard to grow? This picture was taken on Vauxhall road in Union at the Spanish restaurant.

It's an annual, with a short season. It's also classed as a cottage plant, so traditionally they're a bit fussy about their conditions (daisies, roses, herbs, pansies, violets etc). I think in your area, things like deer and ground pests might like them; also aphids etc.

They like lots of sun....a growing condition that doesn't work for my yard!

Rose mallow and the tropical hibiscus are good substitutes. If I grow rose mallows from seeds, I'll often have volunteers for a few subsequent years (if I don't forget what they are and weed them out).

Hollyhock is actually a biennial. Grows first year, flowers in second year. If you're lucky, it will self sow.

It could also be summer poinsettia, a type of amaranthus

Agree with lynnl199 that it may not be a hollyhock. The leaves don't look right, and the flowers while looking sort of the right shape are clumped together more than a hollyhock usually would be. No clue what it is, however.

I also don't think it's a hollyhock, but the photo is not very clear on my screen so I wouldn't venture a guess about what else it might be.
