Can you/ Will you recommend your mattress?

Need a new Mattress - there are so many choices!  I need something firm but tolerant of shoulder/hip pain -

TIA!

We bought a firm full sized foam one from IKEA a number of years back. I think it was around $500.  After we moved and we could finally fit a king sized bed we splurged and bought a Tuft & Needle Mint mattress, and put the full bed with the IKEA bed in my son’s room.    Personally I prefer the IKEA mattress, I find the Mint one to be a bit too soft.  Not crazy soft, but anytime I’ve laid down on the old one I remember how much more comfortable it was for me.  Tomorrow I’ll have to look at the label and see which IKEA mattress it was.  I found the IKEA one to be firm but not painfully so.  The Mint just has a bit too much give for me.  It isn’t horrible, I just wished it were a bit firmer.

ETA:  One thing I do like about the mint is that the edges are firm, so if you’re near the edge it doesn’t feel like it’s sinking, it feels the same as if you are laying in the middle.  I have a CPAP so I tend to sleep on the edge near the machine and this is definitely a bonus

Also, I spend about 75% of my time sleeping on my side.  I’ll sometimes sleep on my back.  Once in a blue moon I’ll sleep on my stomach. Your favorite sleep position does have an influence on how firm or soft of a mattress you should look at

I'm on my second memory foam mattress from Costco and I just love it. About $500-$600 bucks. Maybe higher now.

I'm a back and side sleeper, for what it's worth. Also have hip pain from arthritis.

we have a SERTA I series hybrid king

best mattress we have ever had-pretty expensive 10 years ago but totally worth it

Does Costco have a generic memory foam mattress?

Saatva is great, have both mattress and now sheets. Definitely on the higher end $wise but being you spend 1/3 of life in bed, bedding is a thing I'm willing to spend on. Also fabulous customer service, like real people texting you with updates on order and delivery status.

I ordered linen pillowcases because I heard they’re awesome.  I only got the pillowcases for now because if I hate them I didn’t want to be out a couple of hundred dollars.  I see linen sheet sets (top, bottom, and two pillow cases) on Amazon for less than $200 and I have to wonder at the quality, I’d rather spend a lot and have them last.

It's not generic. I forget the brand name. The brands were different for my two mattresses that I bought about 10 years apart.

What's neat is that it comes compressed in a big box, but much smaller than the mattress itself. You take it out of the box and open the wrapping, and it expands. So make sure you have enough room for that.

The Saatva sheets are nice, feel soft and luxurious, but TBH I don't love the pillowcase -- I prefer a very very cool/crisp pillowcase and Saatva pc is just so-so on that count. I looked on Amazon and found 'The Pillow Guy' which claims to be very cool/crisp -- bought those pillowcases separately. They're cooler/crisper than Saatva, but still they're not as cool/crisp as I like. So the search for the holy grail of the coolest and crispest pillowcase continues.

The sheer number of mattresses out there creates choice overload for me.  Plus the Covid situation makes in-store testing rather unappealing.  My kids think nothing of ordering a mattress and returning it if disappointed.  This seems to be a big hook in the ads for mattresses these days and something younger adults do now without hesitation.  But I really want to know that a mattress is "it" before I stick it in my bedroom.

I totally agree.  Thus my search on this forum.

I tried something different recently.  Did a lot of research and decided that I wanted a hybrid mattress that was latex on top.   Ended up buying my own components from the Latex Mattress Factory and put them together myself (which took roughly 4 minutes).  Same components as a lot of the store mattresses but for significantly less.

Best thing I ever did.   Love them.

I LOVE my Bob-O-Pedic from Bob's Discount Furniture.

After much research I ordered a Winkbed last year. No question the most comfortable mattress that I’ve ever experienced. Ordered it after a medical procedure where I needed to sleep on my back for several weeks. It’s a foam bed, conforms to your body and is absolutely luxurious. A bit on the pricey side but totally worth it. Check out the website. There is always a coupon code available and there is a trial period where you can return for free for a certain period of time if unhappy. Ordered a Casper for another room and it doesn’t even compare.

What components did you go with?

ETA: Not sure if it's related, but another Arizona mattress component site: https://www.mattresses.net/

Came across it via a youtube video of a couple putting together some components that seemed something like what I would be considering:

Has anyone have experience with the Helix mattress?

drummer boy: Is your mattress firm like a board?  Is it comfortable sleeping next to someone else?  Sorry if this is too personal  - there are SO many choices!

well, it's memory foam, so it's not firm like a board. Memory foam takes some getting used to. But it is firm. You should definitely sample a memory foam mattress somewhere if you haven't lay down in one yet.

Unfortunately I've been single during my ownership so I've had limited experience sharing the bed. LOL From what I remember it was fine.

 Sorry just saw this.

I went for the 7 inch Quantum Edge pocket coil, one 3 inch medium talalay topper and one 3 inch firm talalay topper.  And the natural case.   They came vacuum packed in boxes.  Took 5 minutes to put them together.

Prior to ordering I did a ton of research here...https://www.themattressunderground.com/

And they have coupon codes for many of the DIY companies.   You should also call the company to give them info on weight, height and how you sleep so they can recommend the best configuration.

We ended up buying a Helix [hybrid] mattress - so far, so good, along with a new foundation.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Have a Happy Turkey Day

I ended up ordering a hybrid DIY mattress from Arizona Premium Mattress (https://www.mattresses.net/) for the rapidly sprouting teen who really needs a new one. Went with the 8" pocket coils + 2" medium latex topper + 2" soft latex topper + 12" cotton cover to encase them.

We'll see what kiddo thinks in a couple of weeks.

I'm revisiting this topic because I have yet to buy a new mattress and really need one, especially with my back acting up lately.   The focused question is, where to shop.   How's the chain place next to Whole Foods?  If not there where?  I'm not buying a mattress out of  box without testing it.  I need a store.

Try Orange Mattress at 1933 Springfield Ave,Maplewood. You can check the mattresses out. It's been in business forever. I bought mine many years ago and still comfortable.

After much research, looked at Consumer Report's top choices, Charles P. Rogers (NYC and Hackensack) and Avocado Green (Hoboken) mattresses; both expensive.  Had previously purchased a Casper for one room but went with the Charles P Rogers for another.  Honestly, I don't know if I can tell the difference.  Love both but if I did a blind "sleep test," I'm sure I couldn't tell you what I was sleeping on.  And I don't know if I could tell these apart from the mattress we'd had for 20 years.

One of my grown children recently got a Casper mattress and raves about it!  Theirs includes the frame that allows you to raise and lower the head and foot.  There is a Casper store in the Short Hills mall and they have several different types/firmnesses in little "nap rooms" there.  Apparently you can make an appointment to take a nap there to check it out.  I walked in one day a couple of months ago and asked some questions and nobody else was in the store, so I tried them out ... although not to the extent of taking a nap.  They are nice!  We are still trying to decide whether to move up to a King from a Queen.  They do offer a split King for those that are interested in that.
