Columbia High School Robotics...and Flight Club...and Underwater Remote Controlled Robots... Our Army. Navy and Air Force!

This year Columbia HS Robotics Club will have 4 teams. The 4 teams will compete in US FIRST's FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) DIvision in New Jersey (www.newjerseyftc.com ). US FIRST web site is www.usfirst.org . The team numbers are designated by FTC in order of registration (eg, team 4102 registered in 2010 and keeps its number as long as it is participating.)

team 4102 - CHS varsity

team 5332 - CHS JV

team 7959 - CHS Freshmen

team 9563 - CHS Middle School team made up of kids from MMS and SOMS (more to come on that team)

The Robotics Club will sponsor the largest Qualifying Match in NJ on Sunday. November 15, at CHS. We take the two cafeterias and the main gym plus a number of classrooms for judging and our clubroom (the old Loading Dock in D wing) for the event. Please come. More on this later.

Columbia's Flight Club (aka Drone Club) is the charter member and founder of -- we hope -- a Racing Drone League here in NJ. We have a lot of interest and a number of donated drones. In addition to the racing drones we have commitments from the District's Maintenance Department to do rooftop surveys of all the school buildings; from the football coach to video formations and play execution in practice; and the same from the Marching Band Director, Mr. Bauer. The Athletic Director will help get other teams to participate in filming from above team plays and formations.

Our Underwater Robotics club is aimed at the Spring time. We will participate in the US Navy's Sea Perch program. (www.seaperch.org ) This is our first try at it and it will take a year to get this fully operational, using our on again/off again swimming pool.

If successful we will be the only school in NJ to my knowledge that does all three -- land, air and sea.

We also have special purpose robots -- our golfing robot and now a humanoid robot and soon a robot that takes videos of swimmers in the pool and sends the video to a laptop running Dartfish software, the kind used in the Olympics.

If you have a kid interested, please send them to D200 at the high school. Unfortunately we have to charge to participate as we get no funding from the District.

Very cool. Good luck!
