Compost

Good morning,

I want to amend the soil in my pots and flower boxes. I don’t need a lot, and thought I’d fill up a 5 gallon buckets worth at the recycling center. Has anyone used that with success, and does it have any benefits? Or is it just **** fill with glass and plastic shards ? TIA😉

A bigger concern is that it might contain seeds.  Do you want weeds coming up in your pots and flower boxes?

Viable seeds in compost from a “commercial” (hot)  compost operation - speak to the person at DPW who knows the operation best.

Compost as more than a trivial constituent of growing medium for container gardening?  - you may be interested in what tapla says here: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/1423691/container-soils-water-movement-and-retention-xvi#n=165

For about $25 you can get a yard of mulch at the stone place on Springfield Avenue just before you get to Morris Avenue.  If you bring your buckets they might just charge you $10.

You can get a sack of raised bed soil for $8-10 at Home Depot.  One 1.5 CFT bag = about 11 gallons.

If you really want to enhance the soil, buy 1 or 2 sacks of the Black Kow composted manure (1 CFT bag = 7.5 gallons is $6.50).

I do take the compost from South Orange Recycling because I have so many flower beds on a big piece of property. If I were just doing a few pots I would probably buy the potting soil from Home Depot.

If you have the space (not that you need very much), why not consider making your own compost?
