Farewell, Truly Yours (Stationers)

I’m really going to miss Jean and her shop. I could always count on a good chat —politics, Maplewood, her Mets, my Phillies — when I went in for a card. It was one of the first stops when we moved here so my wife could update her address plate for stationery, and getting Jean’s advice on invitations added to the joy of planning my dad’s 80th birthday party two autumns ago. She, like him, was still going strong at work.

A typical memory:

Me: Spinning a rack of cards, always a well curated variety.

Her: “Would you like some help?”

Me: “No, I think I found one.”

Her: “Here’s something nice.”

Me, chuckling: “I’ll stick with this.”

Her: “Really? That one? (Shrug.) OK, sure.”

Sadly, a sudden steep rent increase, my wife was told, has ended a very long run. Our best wishes to Jean and her staff. I only wish each year had included more holidays.

Whoever owns that building is pricing all his tenants out. Won’t be long before there’s nothing left.

To then be torn down and replaced with something bigger?

My very best to Jean who I've known since we were students at Maplewood Junior High.

 An enormous nail salon emporium.

Maybe a Blue Mercury Super Store.

Did they close due to rent increase?

That is what my wife heard there on Thursday. A big increase.

That's really unfortunate.  Jean will definitely be missed.  She printed our wedding programs for us!

Sad news.

She's done our birth announcements, household stationery and holiday cards for years.

We got our wedding invitations there....sorry to see her leave.

I hate seeing the small, unique stores that give a town character closing.  LOL
