Flash Flood Watch tonight, Monday Nov 26

Flash Flood Watch tonight, 11/26.

Heavy rain this afternoon and evening on already saturated ground could complicate the evening commute with road pooling and small stream flooding.  See details below.  There is also a flood warning for the Passaic at Pine Brook (that's east of the 80/287 interchange in Passaic Cty) where the river is expected to crest at least a foot above flood level.

From the NWS:
Flash Flood Watch

Flood Watch
National Weather Service New York NY
347 AM EST Mon Nov 26 2018

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON EST TODAY
THROUGH LATE TONIGHT...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Northeast New Jersey and portions of southeast New York,
including the following areas, in northeast New Jersey, Bergen,  Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union. In southeast New York, all  five boroughs of New York City, Rockland, and Westchester.

* From noon EST today through late tonight.

* As intensifying low pressure approaches this afternoon and moves  across this evening, rain will become moderate to locally heavy  at times. Rainfall of 1 to 1 1/2 inches is expected, and with  the watch area already having received 1 to 2 inches of rain  Saturday and Saturday night, this additional rainfall may cause  flash flooding.

* Fast responding river basins of northeast New Jersey and the  lower Hudson Valley are especially vulnerable to quick rises and  flash flooding. Urban flooding and disruptions to the evening  commute are also possible with the heaviest rain late this  afternoon into this evening.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that leadto flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

I noticed a few really huge puddles on dips in the road on North Ridgewood in South Orange yesterday.  I imagine those will be the same if not worse with today’s anticipated rains, and that lots of other streets will have the same problems.

No doubt these are due to clogged storm drains.

All of us should take a look at storm drains near our houses today and clear whatever we can.

Just went out to try and clear the storm drain closest to my house.  As I approached with my rake, a motorist pulled up and parked on the storm drain!  She backed up a bit when I spoke with her but still did not leave enough room for me to clear the drain adequately.  The portion of the drain that was revealed, showed that it was clogged with leaves beneath the grate, presumably from other cars parking on it with regularity.  Please if you are reading this today prior to the coming storm, try not to park on any storm drain so homeowners will have an opportunity to try and remove the coating of wet leaves that is currently covering them.
