A lot of people would like to know the answer to that because I don't think it is supported, so probably involves some kind of "piracy" to achieve.
This came up on google when you enter FIOS DVR transfer: http://www.ehow.com/how_8528998_record-fios-dvr-flash-drive.html
I had a conversation just today with a Verizon agent who was trying to upgrade me to their new Quantum DVR, but she said that they can't transfer recordings from the old DVR to new because it is considered copyright infringement. I think that's ridiculous - if I could record the show in the first place, why is it not ok to transfer to a new storage place, but apparently that is Verizon's policy. So I assume the same prohibition would apply to making a backup as described.
I'm not concerned with the legal aspect. Verizon won't come after me (they continue copyright) and as I said, I've done it before using a dvd recorder wthout being arrested.
Thanks, rowerg. Tough to find a Windows machine with FireWire these days. But maybetheres a USB version.
Hmm. This might do it...

Your best bet is to just find a copy of the episode on a torrent site. If the show is even remotely popular then the episode will be there. Get utorrent and head to Kat.cr
If you can't figure it out and its important by all means pm me I can probably locate it for you!

I have a video that if like to get off my DVR and into a video file. A friend of mine is on a '"reality" show and I want to save and possibly share it among friends. Hopefully he'll be on more than one episode. ">
I have a DVD recorder which I've used in the past, but it only has composite output. None of my TV's have composite inputs. Just HDMI and component.
Any suggestions for a reasonably inexpensive way to get the video off the DVR?
What Zane said. It's usually easier and faster to find things on the Internet than to try and record them yourself.
True. But that feels more like copyright infringement than pulling something off my dvr.

Interesting. It's actually a service they used to provide when they had a FIOS program for the PC. I still have the last Giants/Patriots Superbowl Big Game on my Mac somewhere from those days, but then they moved everything to mobile apps and dropped the ability to backup DVR recordings because as they said at the time, so few people were using it.
Has anyone used the external storage option on some of the DVRs? I imagine those get encrypted and are unreadable by other devices?
I still don't do bittorrents, primarily because I don't want to take the time to learn which sites are dangerous and which are not. My wife tried to download a TV episode illicitly and quickly got malware on her Mac.

It's the Internet's version of speeding. And it's still copyright infringement no matter how you look at it.

Generally it's impossible. And getting around the encryption and copy protection can be violating even scarier laws. This is all why the best option is to just download it!
