I need to root a Nook tablet and don't know how

I plan to buy the tablet and want to set it up for grandchild with only apps for reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks and without access to the internet (no browser?).

Before I take the leap, is there someone out there who would be willing to help me?

Thank you.

Don't know if you're tied to getting a Nook, but Android tablets have parental controls built in.

 Hi drummerboy.

Budget is the driving force, along with having no connection with a retail provider. The Nook is a Samsung tablet at a good price. Also, while I said grandchild, that should be plural, and if this works I will be buying several.

I lack the know-how to root the tablet and the knowledge necessary to know if the site I found is honest; their "not-a-native-English-language" instructions requires downloading a utility to run as part of the process.

Thanks.

If you are getting a tablet, you might also want them to also be able to access Kindle - tablets can do both.  I don't know how you can get around using either Nook or Kindle apps without having a credit card on file.  If you want to approve each purpose, you can set up an email/password for each account and then download to the tablet once you have given the OK

Thanks, campbell29, but the apps are no problem.  The books will be transferred via usb from computer.

What I need is someone who can show me how to safely root the Nook.If you know someone who can help, please pass this on. Thanks again.

Have you checked with their local library to determine if they can download e-books and e-audiobooks directly to a computer using their library card and the appropriate app?  If this could work, you might not need a special tablet.

I could not tell you how to "root" the thing.  However a neighbor and friend is a sound engineer by trade.  He grew up with computers and the like as playthings. I can send you his contact info through a PM. Never saw an electronic problem he could not solve.

What does “rooting” mean?

Their parent's computers are not available to them except during their allotted times. The library books will be downloaded on their mother's computer and transferred to their tablets.

Thank you. I would appreciate talking with someone who might not only know how and what to do, but also know whether it is a good idea.

Essentially, replacing the operating system of the device so that it is free of the connection to, in this case, Barnes & Noble. I hear of people doing this to Apple devices and such. There are probably newer terms for the process ... like unlocking, for instance? It is more of a geek thing than a grandma thing, for sure.

Trying to send you a Private Message with contact info but it is not working for me.

Contact me at wjdunsavage@yahoo.com      I will forward you the proper contact information.

something like this? Install just apps you want, set parental controls, and done. No need to install alternate OS or mess with the inevitable driver problems

Microcenter’s a short drive from here and they’re quite knowledgeable.  Avoid going on a weekend though

Wow, way better than rooting the Nook. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. And knowledgeable personnel to help as well. Wonderful. Thanks again.
