Looks like a near miss to our north

Wow! Pouring like crazy in Montclair. Within minutes the skies darkened, winds picked. A brilliant flash of lighning brought a deluge. Branches down on many streets along Bloomfield Ave.

Is that it for South Orange?

I'm going to leave these weather threads to the experts.

Hey, I saw it rolling in! I was glad you posted.

I got home to our house between North Ridgewood and Wyoming near the border with West Orange. Tons of branches and debris from the trees in front of our house and a pretty muddy backyard. Maybe we got hit harder in that part of South Orange!

That's my part of town, but above Wyoming. After I saw your post it started coming down and blowing. I went downstairs and saw that it had lifted a patio umbrella the size of a circus tent right up above the table, out of the base and blew it on its side but with the top facing the table. Hard to explain and very puzzling.

Yeah, it was a bit closer than I thought it would be. grin long face

FWIW, there were just a few sprinkles here on the east side of Maplewood. The CHS girls soccer game never paused!

I live near the Maplewood Municipal Building and it got very windy here, but we only had a slight bit of rain. I was hoping for a nice, heavy and soaking rain, but again, it didn't happen.

My parents out in Sparta got walloped. Two trees down, their flags are torn to shreds--much worse than Sandy (though they have power at least!). My mom called afterwards to see if we were alright, and I battened down the hatches in preparation and had the kids eat a picnic dinner in the hallway just in case. We got a slightly strong breeze and a few sprinkles, though the sky was certainly ominous. We're just above Wyoming in Maplewood. It's crazy how site-specific this storm was!

My amature adjustment or update to the forecast:

I was at my booth at the SO Farmers Market yesterday. I noted the clouds getting darker and rolling in. When I saw the Wicked Witch of the West flying in the leading cloud I told the person in the Booth next to me that while I am not a weather forecaster; I think we will soon need cover.

Within minutes the wind started, trash cans and A-frame signs blowing over or flying, tents lifting up and some turned over. And then the rain hit in torrents with a mean side blowing wind.

Me, the puppy and all my stuff got soaked.

The Bread lady from Hoboken Farms had to toss all her breads in the trash and go home. Pet Wants folded. I had to shut down and haul my stuff out of the rain. The bigger farms stayed it out.

Wow, what a show!

Later,

George in Jersey

It was absolutely pouring in Newark around 5:30pm. I got home and the wind had knocked over five of my houseplants that live outside during the summer, but it didn't seem like there was that much rain. Guys at the Farmer's Market said the wind was something fierce, and by the time I got there two tents had already packed up and gone home because they couldn't keep their tents grounded.

It seemed like such a sudden transition from sunny day & no wind, to strong winds blowing dust clouds UP the driveway of SOMS, that my first thought was it was a tornado.

There's a big chunk of tree down on Montrose by Clark. DPW is cleaning it up now but currently the westbound lane is blocked.

This was a small, intense thunderstorm. Little or no rotation -- looks like all the winds were straight line -- and the path was only about 20 miles wide and less than 120 long, from the upper Poconos through Andover and southern Bergen County. We were very much on the edge. Rockaway and North Arlington reported over 3/4 inch of rain. Livingston and Millburn 0. I reported less than 0.01 inch (Maplecrest area)

badly needed but not a drop fell here. A little wind but that's all. We really need a good rain.

Taken after the rain from the roof where I live in Manhattan:

Thanks Tom for the new wallpaper on the library computer. WOW!!

My upstairs neighbor shot it. I didn't even get to see the double rainbow.

Gorgeous, it looks like the city is under a glass dome. Makes me a little homesick.

Fabulous pic!

I sure hope Maplewood gets some rain soon. My lawn is very sad! (And it got seeded, so now we have to water it.)
