Laptop sound lost when connected to external monitor

I replaced my laptop last year.  When I use it by itself, the sound is there.

In my office, I have an old Sony flat screen monitor (ca. 1999).  Since my laptop has only an HDMI port, I use an HDMI x 15 pin adaptor to connect to the monitor, which I use as the extended display.

The display works fine, but when I connect the adaptor, all sound is lost, whether I use the laptop or remote display.

Any ideas as to what is wrong?

HDMI ports on computers have the ability to send sound out through them, so your computer is automatically switching the default audio to the HDMI port when it's connected. You need to go into the sound control panel and change the default back to whatever it is when the HDMI isn't connected The exact thing it says will vary from computer to computer, so if there's anything confusing there just check what it's set to when it's not connected.

That worked.

Thanks,
