Liquid Waste Disposal

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of a bunch of bottles of motor oil, antifreeze, grout cleaner, similar toxic liquids? Unless the county collection system has been updated/improved, it's a non-starter due to schedule. Any ideas?

I have researched this and my conclusion is that you are screwed unless you bring it to Essex County hazardous collection day.

I think the Maplewood recycling center takes motor oil. Can anyone confirm?

I didn't actually read the OP all the way to the end. Motor oil and antifreeze can go to most large (Advance Auto-type) auto parts stores.

ETA: Hmmm, maybe just oil? Their website doesn't mention antifreeze. Technically I could have checked BEFORE posting but where's the fun in that?

I wish there was some way that on the day before the County's collection date we could take this stuff to our local DPW and then have the DPW transport everyone's discards to Cedar Grove. It seems so inefficient for each of us to drive our disposables independently to Cedar Grove.

Looks like they accept oil based paint cans but not latex based paint cans. Are latex based paint cans ok to throw in to the recycling bin or garbage?

Garbage, but they have to be dry. In the summer, two rain-free days in the driveway will do the trick. In the winter, it takes forever.

Put kitty litter in the paint can and stir it.

Monmouth Co. has a household hazardous waste facility, where a resident can call and make an appointment. None of this household hazardous collection day where you have one or two days a year to wait in line.

eta - South Orange Disposal told me to leave the cans on the sidewalk so that the guys would know not to throw it in with the other garbage, as it could still leave a trail of paint on the street when the blade is used.
