which do you like?
Wall mail slot that dumps into a closet or room, not behind the door.

Love my mail slot, since it means I don't need to go through the hassle of stopping my mail when we go out of town and picking it up when we return.

Personally I don't mind having it dump on the hall floor, since we just scoop it up when we come in the house. I don't think having it dump in my living room or dining room would be a significant improvement, but your mileage may vary.

each one has it's plus so I can't decide either...I'm in your boat cheese lol

Corey oh oh

Hubby won't let me cut a hole through the wall for this, and the company that made our door won't let us cut a hole in THAT, so I was stuck with a wall-mounted mailbox. I actually like it.

Mine goes right into my vestibule, no problems there. I love having a mail slot and much prefer it over a mailbox.

We have a mail slot just to the right of the front door. It empties into a box mounted in the hall coat closet. Sometimes, days go by before I remember to check the mail.

The mail slot we have cut into the door is a small size. We are painting the door and I was thinking of getting it cut longer, or filling it in. I've seen some cute ones that go on the side of the house. However, I do appreciate that no one can go thru my mail. Some mail doesn't fit thru the slot tho and just gets left on the porch.

My neighbor has a mail slot through a door into a glass-enclosed front porch with a slate floor. Sometimes a magazine or catalog will get stuck under the door and make it almost impossible to open. There were a couple times when I was dog-sitting that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get in. I had to destroy a couple catalogs. I'll bet a different sweep would fix that problem.

I have a mail slot in my own front door and I really like it, except that sometimes my deaf dog will be sound asleep in that spot and will have a rude awakening when the mail comes crashing down on her.

Mail slot! But I have a giant copper box that holds more than a week's worth of mail, so that's a good alternative. It's from Restoration Hardware.

I like our box. Slots lose heat.

I LOVE having mail delivered to the house. You can't get it any more in many places.

I really appreciate the convenience of having a mail slot. Oversize/do not bend mail gets left where packages do; but, we don't get much of that. Re the heat loss issue: we have two front doors with a space in between (much like an air lock) so heat loss is not much of an issue for us.

I loved my slot. Boxes allow bad people to go thru your mail, and tell all when you are on vacation or just out of the house for a day or two.

Slots lose less heat than any window you have.

I have a slot in the door. I like that way it looks more than having a box on the outside of the house. The dogwalker picks up the mail from the floor everyday so I don't have to bend over.

LOL, I'm kidding. She picks it up because my female dog thinks mail on the floor is something to pee on !

George, that's good to know!

We have an antique mail slot in the wall next to the door, and it is too small, but I love the verdigris copper of the cover. The mail slot is at the top of a chute in the brick and lots of stuff just gets stuck in there. It's supposed to fall into a basket on the floor, but most of the time we have to dive between the antique sewing machine we use as a table and the wall to fish for letters. If there are magazines folded up to go through the narrow slot, sometimes they don't slide down and stick out of the slot anyway.

In our SO house we had a mail slot, but it was small and very close to the ground next to the door. We have always gotten a lot of mail and the carrier never even tried to put it through the slot, just left it in a rubber-band-wrapped bundle next to the door. Our next-door neighbor had a bigger slot in their door, but the sound of magazines hitting the floor sometimes set off their alarm (apparently too close in frequency to the sound of breaking glass).

Here in MD I have the same copper mailbox as j r and I love it.

We cut a mail slot into our front door a wide-ish one. love it! had to do the same for my parents when their post office told them they wouldn't hold their mail anymore when they go out of town (which is often). Never had a problem with things getting stuck under the door when we open it, magazines and catalog go right through even that monster of a Restoration Hardware one. sometimes we lose a postcard advert when it flutters behind the umbrella stand
