Medicare

Do I need to apply for Medicare?  I will be 65 in several months. I am not retiring and have a great insurance plan through work. I have received conflictiting advice. Any help appreciated.

I believe that you do need to fill out paperwork but can remain on your private insurance (though I think that the hospitalization part of Medicare will become primary (this should be invisible to you).

There is one part of Medicare that has no cost to you, so the advice I've heard is that everyone should sign up for that.  That might be the hospitalization part Steve mentioned above, but I'm not sure.  I just turned 64 and need to start getting educated on this, even though I will probably still be on my spouse's employer plan for some time, as he is younger than I am.

Also, talk to your employer's HR department about how they coordinate with Medicare when you turn 65.

Make sure you can stay on your company's insurance; if your company has fewer than 20 employees you have to switch to medicare.

As others have noted, there is no single answer.  It depends on your employer.  I agree with Krnl, you need to talk with HR.  Once you turn 65, some employers will switch you to their Medicare equivalent of the insurance you have through them now.  Others may stop coverage altogether when you reach 65 and expect you to switch to Medicare coverage on your own.

Do get expert advice, or consult a very reliable online source(s).  iirc, there was one part that we had to sign up for at 65, or face increased cost? difficult access? later.  HR should be your friend in this, but if they don't seem prepared, check with other resources.
