Lopez Obrador is Mexico's new president.  I have no idea what this will mean for US/Mexico relations.  I don't think he likes Trump.

Does anyone more savvy than me know what it could mean for the US, if anything?

I, for one, welcome our new Mexican overlords.

According to Trump they had a great conversation. What could go wrong?

He's a leftist and a populist!   They got the Bernie Sanders candidate.  He is anti-Trump, BTW.  information still coming in though.

He's Trump all over !!  His platform to drain the swamp and his populist support is frying the PRI and the PAN -.  Representing the forgotten man- dividing and conquering.  Sound familiar?  Wait for the Russian influences to expose Los Pinos!

Trump was a fake populist running as a Republican.   This guy is a leftist and he's running on a left platform.  He has the support of Jeremy Corbin.  He is critical of neoliberal politics.  I am still learning about this guy, but he is no Trump.  That's an absurd idea (although they both spoke out against NAFTA).  This video discusses his views, and a critique of the mainstream media who says he is a "Trump."  Populism scares the mainstream media.

No he is not.  He is a leftist.  Is Trump a leftist?   Where are you getting your information on this from?  You need to get some new sources.

Twenty years traveling to Mexico once a month on business.  Followed his career throughout- never had a chance until he became Juan Trump.   The far left and far right tend to meet at the turn of the circle.

He's always been a populist, even when circles had many turns.

No, the far left and the far right are as far apart as you can get.

Nope... the "far" marginalizes each but aligns them in fundamentalist objectives.

What "fundamentalist objectives" are you talking about?  The far right is in favor of white nationalism, baby prisons and letting our air and water deteriorate be sold to the highest bidder.  The "far" left (in the US--would be moderates elsewhere)  want everyone to have healthcare and college and a living wage.  Kind of not the same fundamentally, I'd say.

One constant in Mexican politics is that no Mexican politician can kowtow to the United States.  While Americans perhaps are unaware of what we have done to Mexico in the past, you can be sure that Mexicans remember.

Good luck with all that.

Good luck with all that.

What extremism is there in wanting working people to have a decent standard of living and health care like every other civilized country? You think that is crazy and equal to religious fundamentalism?  Huh?  How do you define "wacko-left liberalism?"  What does that look like?

That's not Far Left. Nor is universal healthcare and taxpayer funded higher education. The City University of New York was founded on Free Tuition in the mid 19th Century.

Far Left means Maoists.  Far Right means Fascists.

When people say that the extremes at both ends meet they are talking about Hitler and Stalin or Pol Pot and Mussolini.

Of course in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention the nominated Presidential Candidate said

"Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice; Moderation in the pursuit of Justice is no Virtue".

Trump has never been for or about anything but himself although I do believe that he is pretty consistent in his racism.  He is just allied with Republicans now because Republicans apparently determined that they should do a deal with the Devil if it advances their interests.  I'm still waiting for somebody like Mtierney to point me to the part of the Bible that says doing business with the Devil is OK.

Trump ran as a populist during the election.  I watched his rallies and, at times, he was channelling Bernie Sanders.  But now he is just a typical Republican. I don't understand this view that Trump is somehow worse than the Republicans.  He is a perfect embodiment of their views.  Truly awful.

It's not just the "views" of the Republican Party.

Trump is just a bad person. He was a bad person when he was in favor of the right to abortion and he is still a bad person now that he is against it.

He actually has no "views" except the view of what is good for him personally.

Trump famously said that he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and his supporters would still support him.

In my opinion he could come out in favor of Single-Payer Health Insurance and his supporters would support him. In fact when he told them at a Rally that he came up with the idea and no one had ever thought of it before they would cheer.

A substantial % would cheer if he proclaimed the "Dictatorship of the Proletariat".

I do like that you call him "Juan" after studying him so closely over the last 20 years. It's, like, funny! Easier to remember than AMLO, I suppose.
