Military Jet Fly Over Salute to Health Care Workers

from Bob Roe:  I just saw the military fly over going east to west at perhaps 5,000 feet.  One larger commercial sized jet and three smaller military looking jets in formation on its right wing.   So, while this fly over may seem small, I do want to give a big thank you to those direct patient care people who literally risk their lives and health everyday taking care of covid patients.   This is both in hospitals and in the many long term care facilities and EMS.   I do not think we know for sure the percentage of health care workers infected, but it is very large.  We also should salute those who continue to do direct service to the public such as grocery store, first responders and all the others too numerous to mention in this short post.

from Bob Roe:  Just saw them again much higher.  Three military looking jets and two commercial sized jets.  I wonder who may be in the larger jets.

I have such a negative reaction to using weapons of war, killing machines, to “salute” healthcare workers.  Horrible absurdity.

Really swell of whoever thought of this dingbat move to give an already anxious population another brief reason to be put into a state of unknowing and panic.

It was well advertised and the reactions I heard about (other than the 2 above) were all positive. I just heard an interview with a health care worker at Brooklyn Hospital on 1010Wins. It did give a boost to a population that is overworked and overstressed.

As a veteran, I think it was a misguided waste of money.

I am not sure about waste of money. Aren't pilots required to fly a # of hours to retain certification?

A hospital flyover was done in Colorado last week.

It's not the money - as pointed out, pilots are out there flying, whether or not it's a public event.

It WAS nice but, in the end, only a distraction from the real failings of the Trump Administration.

Contrast the fly-by in support of health care workers, with the contempt for them shown by VP Mike Pence yesterday.

And you can bet your *** that Twitler will use footage from these flyovers in his campaign ads.

I agree with Nohero.  It's a nice gesture but it was also intended to distract from the complete failure by Trump and his administration to manage the COVID-19 pandemic.

Totally grateful to all of these dedicated people. And I share your big thank you!

Robert Roe, what you said.  They get up in the morning, don their PPE, and do the equivalent of running into the burning building to save people.  Not for a day, but for many weeks.  So much courage.

Notify NYC has been putting out alerts of fly overs since 911 to avoid just this sort of panic.  Flyover was also announced in advance on local/regional news programs (TV and radio) and made its way onto social media before the event occurred.  That doesn't mean that everyone in the flight path had access to this information prior to the event.

from Bob Roe:  One group that I want to thank that does not usually get thanked are the pharmacists and people working in pharmacies.  Good Job!!    I recall that right after hurricane Sandy that our local pharmacies opened even though they did not have electricity or internet hook up.   They continued their life saving job of getting out prescriptions.  Since the usual electronic methods were not working, they sometimes simply wrote the amount on a piece of paper and told the customer to coma back and pay when electric was restored.

It was even more inappropriate when you think that our country's grossly obscene level of military spending has consumed resources far better spent on a better health care system that would not have been strained so badly by this crisis and left so many health care workers with inadequate protection and equipment.

from Bob Roe:  If anything good comes out of this pandemic, it is that the US should no longer have strategic supplies like medicines, antibiotics and even masks and other health equipment made in other dubious countries.   Even though it may cost more to manufacture critical supplies in the US, it is worth it. I had no idea that so much of our medicines and supplies are manufactured almost totally in China and India; and India apparently gets its supplies from China.  The Chinese government is not a friend and is not a responsible citizen of the world.  I think that many of the international health care workers mistakenly assumed that China would act in a responsible manner to control new outbreaks.  Perhaps all our manufacturers should rethink doing so much business in China.   Perhaps we should make our cell phones elsewhere.  I am also concerned about quality control of medications from China.   I have seen many very poor and dangerous to health China made products.  Also, a large amount of the Fentanayl came from China.  (Just my rant for today and just speaking for myself.)
