Yes, I don't think you want a lot of dye in your soil. Also, wood mulch in general can deplete all-important nitrogen from your soil.  Main benefits of mulch are:

1. Prevention of weeds and soil erosion

2. Retaining moisture

3. Moderating temperture

4. Improving soil structure and promoting bio-diversity of soil ecosystem

Most wood mulch fail #4.

So should one use leaf mulch instead of wood?

Instead of dyed mulch use cedar or other non dyed mulch.

Leaf mulch is great. If you can find enough to put down 2-4" on your beds!

Home Depot isn't carrying pine mulch this year. Any suggestions as to where to find it!?

This is used exclusively at one of Maplewood's most outstanding gardens, just a stone (or 3)'s throw from Underhill track (with a good arm).

I'd call it brown, not black.

Trucked in from Union County, to 07040, by the seller.

If you mean pine bark: have you tried Lowes or Metropolitan Plant Exchange?

For pine straw: can be ordered online, though expensive. I wait for fall and collect it then, with rake.    If you find a good local source w/spring availability, could you please post it here.

Knew someone who owns a landscaping company.  He was in a lumber/nursery yard, and they were grinding up Sandy storm junk wood, dying it, and selling it as mulch.

That's the problem with dyed mulch--it masks the kind of wood being used. In your friend's case, junk wood is likely to be pre-2002 wood treated with CCA, which contains chromium and arsenic. Even currently acceptable treated wood shouldn't be used for raised beds because it contains ACQ.

Organic sweatpeat is the best mulch that I've found. Hall's in Berkeley Heights sells it by the yard as a price comparable to wood mulch at HD. With a minimum order of 5 yards, they will deliver it to SOM (but will charge a $55 delivery fee.)

Cardinal Garden Center has non-dyed cedar mulch which I believe is from a company in New England.

Don't know the precise distinction between all the different types of mulch, but happened to notice that Orange Garden Center is offering free delivery this week with the purchase of 5 cubic yards of mulch: https://www.facebook.com/OrangeGardenCenter/

Here are the types/prices of mulch they offer: http://www.orangegardennj.com/topsoil-mulch

5 cu. yards  is A LOT of mulch!  In the past, I had bought bulk mulch (min. was 3 yds.) and had a lot left over.  Of course it depends on your yard, but...

Here's something I had saved when researching quantity - just to give you some perspective.

Bags of mulch usually come in 2 cu. ft. and 3 cu. ft. sizes, it would take 14 bags of the 2 cu. ft. and 9 bags of the 3 cu. ft. bags to make a cubic yard.

I got a few cubic yards of cedar mulch delivered by the guy near the i78 overpass just beyond home depot.  delivery charge was $30.  do your own measurements and figure out how much you need before you go.  i ended up with way more than i needed.  Make sure you have a pitchfork and a wheelbarrow to deal with that pile!
