New MacBook

Anyone go see these this weekend? What an absolutely gorgeous machine. I have been on the fence about a MacBook Pro vs Air for a year. I loved this machine but the lack of ports concerns me. I don't do much on it- email, web surfing, spreadsheets, client mailings. Tech gurus, opinions please!

Would you ever use it as a desktop replacement, and need to have multiple things plugged into it (monitor, mouse, phone, external dvd drive, etc)? If so, not the right machine at this time.

If you use it mainly as described and all you usually have plugged in is a power cord, then go for it, it would be fine.

More that you'll need an adapter to use a USB thumb drive- some people use those a lot.

I occasionally use a thumb drive but not often. I don't own a desktop anymore. I don't have a need.

Just get a USB hub for $20.

The girl at the Apple store also said $20 but that they weren't available yet? Does that sound right? Or maybe she meant they didn't have them in the store?

Any other downsides to this machine I should be thinking of? ( I know it costs a lot!)

I just got a new Air and it's kind of driving me crazy, partly because your last computer is like your favorite old shoe, and partly because my big monitor doesn't have a lightningbolt outlet. So I can either use wifi and work on two screens, or use the Ethernet cable with an adapter. Or get a new monitor. (This is my work setup.) But I think that ultimately, it's like the loss of the CD slot -- NBD.

Not a tech guru, but if you need speed and portability, it's a great choice.

You got a new Air or the new MacBook that was released on Friday?

I never connect a monitor, my printer is wireless. I occasionally transfer files from a stick but that's about it.

And I like my current laptop as much as I like a shoe that hurts and has dog poo stuck to the bottom. A crummy HP I bought 2 years ago on Black Friday. I detest windows 8 (still), it is slow, the screen display almost blurry and very heavy.

I plan to get the new MacBook, but not right away. I want to wait to see how early adopters do with the single port, and I want to wait until the first batch has been sold through, because I've had a couple of bad experiences with buying the very first batch of a brand new Mac model. But even though I'm sure I'll need a USB-C to USB adapter and hub eventually, i find the single-port idea very appealing, and the machine looks gorgeous. My MacBook Air is the mid-2011 model, and it's still going strong, so I'm not in a rush. But I'll still get the new one later this year, I think.

It really was absolutely beautiful. I loved the new keyboard and the retina display.

I'm kind of glad I got the version just before this one.

Wait, so you are switching to a Mac? Give it three days.

Give switching to a Mac three days, if you've only ever had Windows. It's like a set program of transition, and then you can't imagine what took you so long. But it hurts. But the new keyboard is awesome!

I get it. I've been searching for the right Mac for a year, though. So I am ready!

Only the 13" MBP has been updated so far this year. The MBP 15" was updated last July. So if you prefer the larger screen version you have to wait or get the 2014 15" version.

This site gives a heads-up when a newer version may be released.

I think we will be in the market for a second laptop later this year, so we don't have to share one (it's a lot like trying to share the TV remote!). I'll keep this thread in mind. Then again, I could probably deal with just having an iPad for myself and let him have the laptop.

Even harder at my house.
My spouse and I haven't shared a computer since sometime in the 1990s.  We stopped making our kids share when they got to middle school.  Usually there are more computers than people in our house.

Ick on sharing a laptop.  Double ick on sharing an iTunes account or a bathroom.

It doesn't really bother us that much, apart from sometimes having to wait a little while so the other person can do something on it.

Although, come to think of it, we used to have the laptop and a desktop in our house in West Orange, so I'm not sure why we stopped having two when the desktop became obsolete. Huh. I guess I've really gotten used to it! The iPhones help, because I can do a lot of what I want to do on the phone.

When my kids were still at home, all four of us shared a bathroom.  But we each had our own computer.  (We do have a second bathroom, but not on the same floor with the bedrooms.)
