New York Football Giants

Jabrill Peppers seems to have a lot of upside and he's a local.

Despite his undeniable talent, his personality and mentality (refusing to be a member of the TEAM) made this move necessary.
Despite 12 picks in the coming draft, Giants still won't be a good team this year.  Then, when Eli's contract has expired, they should have a reasonable foundation to build on with their next QB.

I think this trade is a concession by the NYG that they don't expect to be competitive this season under any circumstances.

Beckham is an astonishing talent, a player who can change a game with one reception.  He had 35 touchdowns on 288 catches over his first three seasons.  That is incredible!

He also was injured in a freak way, then came back too soon.

He also is a headcase and from all reports a cancer in the clubhouse.

And with Manning unable to consistently hit him in stride his value was less than it should be to the Giants (his first injury came when he went up for a dying duck that Manning mis-threw, if I recall correctly).

Given that the Giants seem committed to at least another year with Manning firing blanks much of the time, I grudgingly admit this trade might have made some sense, even as I hate to see them lose a talent of this caliber.  A first round and a third round pick, plus Peppers starting at safety, is probably as much as could be hoped for.  Peppers is a dynamic player who had a rough first year and a great second year, so that takes the sting out of letting Collins walk.

Can Gettleman draft or sign or trade for the QB of the future now?  He has a lot of draft picks to play with, that is for sure.  Would he have the guts or ability to let Manning go before his next contract goes hard?  Well, he let Collins walk and traded Beckham, so clearly he has the approval to do some heavy moving.  But Manning?????

They need to draft a quarterback, and let him spend 1/2 season learning /watching Manning.  Trading Beckham means they are in rebuilding mode.

I would have preferred them if they had signed Foles and kept Beckham.

All reports are that he works extremely hard and is very popular in the clubhouse.

Yes, it sounds like the players like him but management does not.

If they are rebuilding, it's time to jettison Eli.

Well, then there is this which says that the Browns are now a favorite for the Super Bowl and the Giants are a favorite for the Toilet Bowl.  I am trying to put lipstick on this pig, but I just can't keep it it going......yuck.

Not to mention the impact this will have on Barkley.  I can see teams triple teaming him without worry about a deep threat.....

the worst part is that Barkley and Beckham were the reasons to watch the Giants.  And now one of them is gone.  It's like the Mets -- they are watchable even when the team is bad when deGrom, Syndergaard or Wheeler are pitching. Even when they lose, you've got a chance to see some great performances.  Now the Giants will be bad AND boring.

Absolutely no reason to follow the Giants this year ( except for Barkley ). What a mess. I agree they should have dumped Eli and kept OBJ. Well, it will all pan out in ticket sales. The Maras have finally cracked up.

They're perilously close to Barkley becoming Barry Sanders, with all that entails.

Maybe it's because I haven't been watching the NFL for a few years, but I'm actually excited about this trade and the other one where the Giants got the kind of offensive lineman they needed. My thoughts on rebuilding, which clearly this is, is that you concentrate on the lines. Teams that are strong in both those areas are almost always playoff teams even with lower tier talent at the skills position, because in the NFL a qb has time he becomes much better, and receivers, given enough time, will get open. Having Barkley in the backfield forces defenses to cheat towards the line, so that too makes the life of wide receivers easier. Are they going to be a playoff team this year, probably not.

That being said in the NFL over the last 10 years it seems that all the teams that "came out nowhere" to have a good run into the playoffs have been teams that were unusually healthy at the end of the season, and this makes sense because they're fielding starters (maybe not top flight but still they're better than second stringers on elite teams which are nonexistent). So, I wouldn't at all be shocked if the Giants made it to the playoffs. This isn't so much a statement of confidence in the quality of the Giants but the lack of depth of NFL rosters.

I agree this is a rebuild but only makes sense if they draft a new QB.  Who does a rebuild with an under performing qb that is over paid.

 The Raiders?

Basically every team in the bottom half of the NFL.  By definition, QBs are overpaid these days unless they are a top 10 QB.

Except most teams in the bottom half are still in hopeful contending mode and not really rebuilding. And only Derek Carr is the sixth-highest paid QB.

I think I'm alone in this, but I like the idea of building a good offensive line and a new team in front of Manning.  He's going to get beat up while they gel this year, but he can show them how professionals play even if he isn't that good.  They are going to lose anyway.  Next year, drop a new QB into a more established structure so he can concentrate on improving instead of getting up off of the ground.  Essentially, let Manning take the hits this year to save a young QB.

“He can show them how professionals play even if he isn’t that good”. Wow. I’m speechless.

You’re not alone, I like what they are doing and I’m not in the gloom and doom room like most folks.

Speechless, really?  Well, once you can talk again, think about this.  There are on field skills beyond physical skills, and dealing with the fans and press in New York is another skill.  He can help a young team mature.  Or, you can put a young QB out there with a bunch of young new players and let them all find their own way while he gets clobbered.  Either way they lose next year.  What gives you a better team the year after?

I’ll reserve judgement on young vs seasoned quarterbacks leading a young squad until I see what Cleveland comes up with this year.

Then you are in favor of them drafting or finding a young QB to take over after this season?    However, if they keep waiting for the perfect QB to replace Manning, it will be like groundhog day watching the Giants keep blaming different parts of the offense as long as nobody says anything negative about Eli.

Absolutely they need to find their next quarterback.  I think Manning  as a player is on empty, but not as a leader.  Even if they get a QB this draft, I'd sit him for a while to learn and, as I said, let Manning take the hits while the line comes together.

I seem to remember some players questioned Mannings ability as a leader.  Maybe that whole aspect is over rated?

Okay.  I'm not enough of a football fan to really debate this.  Mark Sanchez is probably available.

It's quite possible the Giants will pry Rosen from the Cards and draft a pass rusher at #6.

Rosen was terrible last year, but it's hard to know if it was him because the entire rest of the team was terrible too.  But it seems like a bad sign that the Cards are giving up on him so quickly.

Couple that with his various concussions, shoulder surgery ( I know not throwing arm) and his laid back Southern California attitude, not sure he's what the doctor ordered.

If the Giants don't make finding a young QB the highest priority this season, they are negligent and everyone in management would deserve to be fired.

Why not. Seems like Giants are already acquiring every Cardinal available. You know, because of the Cardinals' winning pedigree.
