Now a general weather chat thread

Monday, Aug 7th

Showers and thunderstorms will pause for awhile this morning.

Later this afternoon, showers and thunderstorms likely. Rain could be heavy at times.

Air quality is Moderate this morning. The incoming cold front should move any residual smoke out to sea though so air quality should improve to Good by this afternoon.

I was just looking at the radar on my phone and the shape of the storm is like a bow. I’m no expert but I know that brings very strong winds. It might get really windy in the next few hours.

Maplewood just sent an email blast warning of severe storms and possible power outages.

The storm looked bad on the radar and then it fizzled out.

Seems we got off easy.

A work colleague in Delaware said they’re cleaning up from a lot of downed trees. Their house was undamaged but some neighbors didn’t care as well.

I checked lightening maps online yesterday and saw the lightning was fading out in our area. At that time I could also see Delaware completely covered in red/yellow dots of lightning strikes. It looked really intense.

We had to climb over several downed trees on the trail we were on in eastern Pa, across from Frenchtown.

Thursday August 10th

Showers this afternoon and evening, with a chance of thunderstorms. The trend in the models is towards less severe weather, but there remains some hint of the potential for heavy rain and gusty winds from earlier forecasts.

Air quality is and should remain Good.

Saturday Aug 12th

Chance of showers this morning, scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon and evening.

Air quality is Good this morning although a sunny day could send ozone layers up to Moderate this afternoon.

I was up at Eagle Rock earlier this past week.  It was a low humidity clear sunny breezy day and NYC and all should have been very clear to sight.  Instead, a haze hung over the metro area and I am thinking it was ozone.   The primary cause is cars.

I hope Maplewood was not hit by the storm we drive through on 87 North up to Saugerties this evening. A full half hour of flat out sheets of rain and lightning all over the place. I mean it wasn’t just raining, that was some serious all out F***ING raining. Traffic slowed to about 20mph if you were one of those brave enough to drive. Many people pulled over. I wonder if there was any flash flooding.

We got our very own storm at about 3 this morning. Quite a show.

A transformer about a block from me exploded setting a live wire on fire.  Street was closed.  Fire department was called.  Not aware of any injuries or property damage.

Yeah, around 3 am the thunderstorm woke me up. That was a lot of rain in a short period of time.

For a change, I slept right through it. We went to New Fairfield CT yesterday for a wedding shower and got back around 8:15pm. Maybe a little speckle of rain, but for the most part, smooth sailing.

Peter Wick, we were driving down from Saugerties at about the same time!  I thought to google flash flood warnings and found one on the route we were traveling, but we had just passed the area when I looked.  It was a scary drive for about 20 minutes, especially since we were behind one driver who clearly couldn't make out the lane demarcations and nearly swerved into a passing car.

Ours was a very isolated storm

The one near Saugerties was a monster

That was a doozy last night.  Crazy lighting for an extended period of time.

Mon, Aug 14th

Showers and possibly thunderstorms tonight into chance showers and thunderstorms Tuesday morning

Air quality good

Lost a decent sized branch in the storm. Thankfully no roof or automobile damage.

Thanks, Max!

We cut down two big (and rotted) trees a couple of weeks ago. I am grateful for that.

Karen did you know they were rotten before you cut them down?

A couple of trees we had were not doing well. When we finally had them taken down they had huge rotten centers.

Yes. They had dead branches at the top. One tree had raccoons (family of seven) and bees (or wasps) living in its hollow. We called an exterminator about the raccoons but they didn’t think they would be living in the tree. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Afterwards, the exterminator said they’d be fine as long as they were able to follow their parents. The bees/wasps made their way somewhere else…

With the rain overnite (early this morning), we should be back in positive figures for the month to date, the year, and  “since June 1”.

Did you foresee that 1.01 inches, Max?  I did not. Where did it come from?

Frankly, no, I did not, although there was a 20% chance in the forecast.  FWIW, here in east Maplewood we only got 0.79"

Are we looking at some rain this afternoon/evening? I hadn't seen it in the forecast (and made some outdoor plans) but it now looks threatening out.
