WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: Wintery Mix Sunday Morning 2/12

Some of the models show snow or sleet mixing in with the rain tomorrow morning. Not tragic but not pleasant, either. Little or no accumulation, which will be washed away as the temps rise and rain continues into the late morning.

The forecast has become colder for tomorrow morning, and with that the rain is now sleet, wintery mix, and perhaps a bit of snow. Precip begins about 4am with light rain. About 5-6 in the morning expect more sleet to mix in with a chance of freezing rain, perhaps a light glaze of ice. Rain and sleet could continue until evening, although never heavy. They do not expect this to be a serious ice storm. Teated Treated roads should be passible but be careful, watch for icy patches, especially in the morning.

Ice is the worst! Meanwhile, my sister in Maine is looking at another snow day Monday (they get LOTS up there). Sigh...

So they're putting teats on the road for additional traction. Good idea! cheese

Sort of on the same subject, I've noticed occasionally on the highways around here that it looks like they're spraying something on the roads. (Haven't seen them spraying, but I can see the stuff on the roads.) I thought maybe it was an ice treatment or something. Anyone know anything about that?

I would think it is a salt slurry.

Snow and freezing rain this morning, with rain and sleet later.

The rain/snow line wanders through the area all morning, so at any given point it could be one or the other or both. Precipitation is light right now, but will be picking up a bit between 6 and 7.

that's sorta what I was thinking. Is it new or have I just been oblivious?

Maybe it's new to this area but they used it in Nova Scotia for years now since they have tons of wacky changing weather and lots of freeze/thaw events.

It's also a more efficient way to get the salt on the road and to waste less of it.

Yes, it saves salt, but the equipment capable of mixing and distributing brine is very expensive. And, with mistreatment by DPW/DOT personel (who fail to clean & prep for seasonal storage at the end of the season), it is subject to large repair/replacement costs.

I was just out on the East side of Maplewood, and main roads seemed OK, mostly wet. Local side streets seemed more slippery.
