Primary Tomorrow!

I realize it is pointless, but I see no discussion about tomorrow's primary. If you are a Democrat I guess the only interesting thing is that you have a chance to lodge a protest vote against the corrupt POS that is our Senator Menendez. Glenn Greenwald has a good article about what a sad state of affairs exists in that party: https://theintercept.com/2018/06/04/democrats-set-to-re-nominate-sen-bob-menendez-after-preventing-challengers-showing-how-calcified-the-party-is/ Lisa McCormick appears to be a decent person pushing for the right things, too bad she doesn't stand a chance.

I am voting for Lisa tomorrow.  Disappointed to get a robocall from Corey Booker supporting Menendez last night.

I'm perusing the sample ballot now. It does seem almost pointless to go, other than the simple exercise of a fundamental right.

Maybe a protest vote for McCormick is in order. Menendez doesn't inspire me and at times I wish he had chosen not to run again. But Bob Hugin can't be brushed off with his millions to spend so Menendez' incumbent status helps toward a goal (however unlikely) of a blue Senate next year.

Funny, I can't get on McCormick's website right now. Maybe it's swamped with people looking at an alternative.

The vote, -use it or lose it.

Ugly situation.  I will not vote for Menendez.  As for McCormick, I can' get her bizarre "Abortion is Good" thing out of my mind (its a good tool to curb overpopulation, among other things, according to her).   Supporting a woman's right to choose is not synonymous with saying that abortion is "good."  Blue skies are good.  Clean water and air is good.  Abortion is not "good."

The robocall irked me as well, especially at 8:30 when we're trying to get the kids to fall asleep.

I checked Hugin's website to see what his position is on the issues. I learned nothing!

I may cast a protest vote for McCormick, but I'll vote for Menendez in November. Any Republican Victory will be claimed as a victory for Trump.

I think Hugin's position will be "Menendez is corrupt!"

I will definitely be voting Democrat in the fall and I hope there's a good turnout. I think there are two flippable Representative seats in the state.

There are corrupt individuals with defensible policies. (Menendez).

There are good individuals with defensible policies. (Jimmy Carter).

There are corrupt individuals with monstrous policies. (Trump).

There are good individuals with monstrous policies - is that even possible. (any Trump supporters who aren't corrupt).

The decision in November won't be hard - Menendez.

Menendez is corrupt, but what’s the alternative in Nov? Voting in a Republican that will further erode women’s choice and social services for the poor and sick? Someone who’ll undoubtedly kiss Trump’s ring? Not a chance.

well it seems that a lot of people in the state must feel the same way about Senator Menendez as some of us. When someone with almost no campaign money can capture almost 40% of the vote in the primary against a well-established incumbent, that tells you something about people's attitudes. I was reading a piece on slate.com that talked about how this is a big headache for the November election. But I have a feeling most of the people who voted for McCormick will turn out to vote for Menendez in the fall. I think a lot of those votes were to send a very specific message about his behavior in office.

I'm no big fan of Menendez, and I voted for McCormick yesterday. But I'm surprised at all the people who are calling Menendez corrupt. The feds tried and failed to prove that corruption (was it twice that they tried? and then they just gave up.) and didn't come close. There was never any evidence of a quid quo pro. So how was he corrupt, exactly?

I'm wondering what the evidence is that I apparently missed that makes everyone else so sure of his corruption.

Agreed. I voted for Lisa too, but will reluctantly be voting for Menendez in November. Giving up a Senate seat is unthinkable, what with rumors of Roberts planning retirement soon. Bigger fish to fry.

I an not a fan of Menendez but I didn't think that Lisa was a strong enough candidate to win in November. I personally think it is important to have political experience. We just need to get Sheena to run ; )

Ugh. I blocked that number after receiving that. I was quite stunned.

In unrelated news, the judge who sentenced Brock Turner to that pitiful sentence has been recalled in yesterday’s Primary.

He took a ton of free trips from Dr. Melgen and lobbied on his behalf. Then Menendez suddenly decided reimburse Melgen after getting busted for taking free trips/gifts.  In a separate case, Melgen was found guilty of medicare fraud and sentenced to 17 years in prison.  The Senate ethics committee is still investigating Menendez.

Do you believe that Trump is corrupt?  I guess you can't since the feds haven't proved he is corrupt yet.

The problem with corruption in the United States is that it is essentially legalized and institutionalized by a body of law crafted by the rich and powerful for the rich and powerful.  Many politicians are not corrupt according to the law but are certainly corrupt by any common sense understanding of the term.

I think the operative portion of drummerboy’s comment was “tried and failed.”

Ya pays ya money and ya makes ya choice.

https://www.politico.com/states/new-jersey/story/2018/06/06/menendez-vs-hugin-corrupt-senator-vs-greedy-pharmaceutical-exec-445987

Menendez survived a six-week federal corruption trial last fall after a jury deadlocked on bribery charges against him. However, the Senate Ethics Committee later determined he had violated federal lawby accepting and not reporting private jet flights and other gifts from his friend, Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen.

Hugin supported and donated heavily to President Donald Trump’s 2016 election effort and headed a New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company that raised prices 20 percent in less than a year on a key cancer drug, parked money overseas and made it harder for companies to produce a generic version of its drugs.

"In November, voters will have a clear choice between bad Bob Menendez’s embarrassing and corrupt behavior and Bob Hugin, a self-made job creator and former Marine,” Hugin spokeswoman Megan Piwowar said in a statement. “The Senator cannot escape that he broke federal law and both his fellow Democrats and Republicans found that he needed to repay his 'best friend's' gifts."

“Greedy drug company CEO Bob Hugin is going to have to answer for his record of driving up prices for cancer patients while making millions for himself,” Menendez adviser Michael Soliman said in a statement. “Hugin is going to have to explain to the people of New Jersey why he denied access to affordable drugs in a way that even Donald Trump’s administration said was outrageous.”

As the Greenwald article I posted points out, the Democratic establishment did everything in its power to make sure that Menendez got the nomination, so they must take a large share of the blame - remember that when these people come up for re-election. Despite having virtually no campaign and little money, Lisa McCormick got almost 40% of the vote, so one can only speculate how things might have turned out if the Dems realized they needed to dump someone whose main virtue is 'at least he's not a Republican'. Maybe there is still time for a serious thrust by an independent candidate for November?

Was Menendez's position on the ballot a result of the Essex County Dem. Committee?

If so, which members voted to support this?

From the Greenwald article:

Every major Democratic power broker in the state quickly endorsed Mr. Menendez for re-election in 2018: Philip D. Murphy, the governor-elect; Senator Cory Booker; Stephen M. Sweeney, the senate president; Craig Coughlin, the incoming speaker of the State Assembly; George E. Norcross, an influential political leader in southern New Jersey; and the county chairs in northern Democratic strongholds such as Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Essex and Middlesex.
