Real ID at MVC

Not as bad as I thought it would be, but at the same time they are still beta testing and most people are getting regular renewals.  Once everyone is getting a Real ID I can easily see the wait times go up

They did question if I had brought enough documents, until I pointed out that my current valid drivers license counted as proof of address.  After checking they realized that it did  cool cheese  So in addition to double checking your documents before going, also print out the pdf to reference in case they mistakenly question something

On the MVC website it states that a birth certificate in a different name is only accepted if you also have a court order for a name change.  However, on the pdf they say you can have a court order OR a marriage certificate for a name change.  MVC did accept my marriage certificate along with my birth certificate

All in all it went pretty smoothly.  But I do have to ask why it has taken so long to have Real ID in our state if they knew this deadline was coming for six years now

NJ MVC is screwed up.

Which location did you go to?  I know they are only offering at limited locations and by appointment only.

Flemington.  I had signed up online a few weeks back so they would let me know when it was available near me.  Appointment only was actually nice, no standing in line at all.  I went to the welcome desk, said I had an appointment, and they had me sit right down.  I still had to wait, but never while standing in line

My appointment was for 3, I was done and out the door by 3:35.  Not the quickest trip, but they were also training the woman how to process the documents, so it is understandable that it wasn’t super quick

However, the deadline for airline travel is next year.  But with current licenses expiration dates are staggered over four years.  For the next year I predict that wait times for Real ID will increase while people try to get them.  Had they started this three years ago people could have been switching over to Real ID as their licenses came up for renewal anyway instead of everyone trying to get it done in one year

Also, I asked if I had to produce everything again when my license renews, since they scanned everything and my SS card and birth certificate won’t be changing.  They had no idea, and said to bring it next time just in case since they didn’t know

I got an email about a week ago saying that it was being rolled out in Bayonne. I had the impression it was the only office, but maybe they meant the only one anywhere near me.

I have a passport card for now.  so I can wait until my license is up for renewal

I got an email today that it’s being offered at the Springfield office. I signed in to make an appointment but no openings until late November and my first selected slot got taken in the time it took me to enter my email address. Going fast!

However, I noticed that East Orange was also listed in the location menu, and their appointments are wide open. Even tomorrow. I had my choice of time slots for all days next week.

I got that same email, but didn't notice it until about 2 hours later.  All appointments at Springfield and East Orange were taken through early January at that point.  Guess I'm still going to wait.  NJ is making a mess of this.

Same here and I’ve had it and been habitually using it for TSA since before I even knew about RealID. $30 for 10 years is a bargain for a solid photo ID and it lets me leave my passport book safely at home and my drivers license safely in my wallet for domestic air travel.

Such a stupid, annoying calendar. You literally have to click on each day to see if anything’s available. To save you the trouble, not a single day available at any of the locations I clicked. smh

True. They should use color-coding or something to indicate days that have openings. Pretty basic web stuff.

Forgive my ignorance-  what the heck is this about?

TIA

In many states, current licenses will not meet TSA requirements for domestic air travel. The licenses must change to comply. The REALID will be acceptable for air travel under the new requirements. This will into effect in later 2020 so if you have an old license and try to fly with it end of next year, you will be denied.

also need it to get into a federal building...

I might have mentioned this on another thread about Real ID, but my license came up for renewal in May during the shut down.  I was eligible for mail in renewal, so I went that route.  My renewed license, good for four years, does have the star on it to show it is a Real ID, though it is a different shade of yellow than the original star.  I don't know if that actually means anything, or if their printer was just running low on that color.
