SOMA Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Group

Is this open to anyone?

Yes, the book group is open to everyone. Looks like the 25th of October will be fine. Thank you for hosting and no worries, ridski!

So, once again, all are welcome to mine on Friday October 25th at 8pm. PM me for address and parking options. We'll be discussing "The Windup Girl" by Paolo Bacigalupi (which of course I haven't finished yet) and based on out last meeting, many more nerdly topics, I'm sure. I'll have some snacks and adult and young-adult beverages, but feel free to bring anything you like specifically.

Bumping. Anyone still interested, let me know via PM so I let you where I am.

Thank you for hosting tomorrow night. What can I bring? Of course in theme with The Windup Girl. I am thinking clockwork martini mix...

I believe we have cheese, crackers, chips and dips, some chocolates and a selection of wines and beers covered. Anything else you'd like, feel free. If it's just the mix, I believe we have some Russian vodka (possibly from your old cellar?) to fill it out, but we're out of gin, as usual.

If anyone wishes to bring "Na" be my guest. Just please don't say that word in front of me, I've been listening to the audiobook, and it's driving me bonkers.

If I had time, however, I would try to concoct a cocktail called the "Rampaging Megadont", but alas, I do not.

Btw Doctor Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Theatrical Simul-Broadcast of the 50th on November 23rd.

Book group discussion is tonight at 8pm! Please PM me for address.

I am thinking a Singapore Sling might be in theme with tonight's Science Fiction biopunk book selection.

Could work. But so far it looks like there'll only be three of us drinking them!

PM me peeps, so I can tell you where the venue is!

Thank you for hosting us at your home. I liked that the book generated a lively discussion. Best ones are when the readers have strong dissenting views. Again anyone is welcome to join. Next meeting will be in December. "Among Others" by J. Watson. First fantasy book, fun read.

Sorry, the author is Jo Walton.

Drop by for trick or treating this Thursday. Doctor Who house in Maplewood. Have a safe and Happy Halloween!

I am thinking of adding Ready Player One, Redshirts and Boneshaker to the reading list. All are welcome to join in. The list has on it Among Others (Dec.), Seven Views of Olduvai Gorge (Jan.) and Surface Detail (Feb.) I am short on Fantasy books. Any suggestions, modern ones?

Fantasy? Here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elric_of_Melniboné

Read them, loved them. Any newer fantasy to recommend? 300-400 page ish novels please.

Speaking of, has anyone seen the Ender's Game movie yet, or are some still boycotting?

Boycott, but more importantly: NYT says " there could be as many as 40 billion habitable Earth-size planets in the galaxy..." Drinks on me.

Good morning! Welcome to the freeze. On December 6th, please join us for a lively discussion of Among Others by J. Walton, winner of the Nebula and the Hugo. Hosts? All may come (even the unread.)

Two weeks until Thanksukkah! Happy holidays!

Unfortunately I am going to postpone the Among Others discussion until January. That will give us the holidays to read it and the other books. Enjoy!

Happy Thanksukkah! SOMA SF and F book chat will resume in 2014 in January with Among Others by Walton. Also Surface Detail and Tales of Olduvai Gorge in the following months. Happy New Year too!

Sci fi flash: SOMA Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Group now likeable on Facebook. Please join us there, too.

Is Thor Science Fiction? Apparently yes. Is this a spoiler?

Looking for further suggestions. Also a date and host for January. Please join us! Even if you haven't read the Walton book.

I did a quick search of the "Best" 2013 sci-fi novels .....

THE ONE-EYED MAN by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
TRANSCENDENTAL by James Gunn
FUTURE PROMETHEUS: Emergence & Evolution - Novellas I & II by J.M. Erickson
THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE by Neil Gaiman
Abaddon's Gate by James S.A. Corey (third in a series ...)
Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord

Regards,

RCH

I don't know any of you guys, so I don't know how old you might be, but are any of you aware of the Dorsai saga?

I read one of them back in the 80s. Gordon R. Dickson?

I remember them a bit. Soldier culture in the future.
