Spotted Lantern Fly

I saw my first nymphs yesterday. Maybe go through your yard and remove Tree of Paradise.

Nymphs are at stage 2 right now, they've been around since June.

I saw my first one the other day - in the red phase.

I mentioned in the other old thread that they would probably be bad this year. I've been seeing the nymphs in my yard for 2 weeks now.

We've killed at least 100.  Vinegar.

Me, too.  Just trying to figure out how to implement it on my car.  My parking space is RIGHT under a Tree of Life,  Man, did they make a mess of my car last year! Do you think this would work if I placed the bowl UNDER my car?  Just ended the life of one I found on my apartment door last night.  Yuck

I couldn’t wait till tomorrow, I just put a plastic bowl out with that woeful concoction on the table outside under the tree. They’ve been jumping into my hair recently.
Can you put it on the roof of the car? I think it’s the smell of pinesol that would attract them.

I could put it on the roof of my car.... but then I'd have to remember to remove it before I go anywhere.  Have left many things on my roof in the past.

The Tree of Life is in the back yard of the house behind our parking lot, there's even a fence between us (several I think).  I bought a cheap (REALLY cheap) car cover (from TEMU) that I haven't even tried to cover my car with yet.  (It might last a day -- or it could surprise me.)

I think you guys may be a day or two ahead of us over here in East Orange, because yesterday was only the second time I saw one.

Thank God for 24-hour food stores.  Have no Pine Sol, but thanks to Shoprite, I COULD have some before I sleep tonight.

What a way to ruin summer!

I don't know if it has to be Pine Sol. Apple cider vinegar and a couple of drops of drops of Dawn dish soap works on fruit flies.

Just vinegar or a mixture with something else?

just vinegar.

Believe it or not, vinegar and a small amount of dish detergent also makes a good weed killer.

okay.  I do not have a verified body count.  I don't, in fact, know if vinegar is killing these devils or just making them move away.  I just sprayed 100 of them and they all jumped.  No corpses.

I got two in my pinesol concoction…

I caught more in my empty plastic juice bottle… grin

now that's funny.

Can you hang it (like a hanging plant) from the tree so that it is OVER the car?

The tree is far too tall for me to reach.  I've got my Pine Sol and I'm going to try it, putting the Pine Sol, water, and sugar under the bushes at the front of my spot, where the arbor vitae are.  Maybe that will hide it enough from anyone who wants to swipe it and put it in front of THEIR car.  I think the visual that came to Jamie through his feed is just too convincing in favor of Pine Sol. Cider vinegar has never worked the way I hoped when I have ants or other creepy crawlers.

But we don't seem to have as many adult beetles over here as it seems you've got over there already.  So even if there's only a few tomorrow, that may be because we're just getting started over here in beautiful downtown East Orange. or that I can't get it right next to the trunk.

So I put out my pan with the Pine Sol concoction in it yesterday morning and seem to have caught only one little baby and some other (once-) flying detritus since then.  Yet I've already had to spend a week's worth of washer fluid to clean my windshield each of the four or five times I've been out since then.

As soon as I did that I was riddled with guilt: We have at least two feral cats who are fed by the homeowners across the fence behind my parking space.  They've been around ever since I moved here. Am I now responsible for the sudden (or even worse, the slow and lingering) poisoning of these adorable kitties?  Since I can't really get close to the tree trunk myself -- I'm only under the branches that extend from the trunk and over the fence -- I'm not sure I'm near enough to make a difference in the number of Lanterns Flies I can "remove".

The only part of my car that's flat is the roof. which is hard for me to place anything on, (or remember to move every time I take the car out.)  And the cats can regularly be spied on the roofs of cars to catch a pleasant view.  I put it on the ground by the fence near the front of my car. More than the hassle of washing my car down myself a couple of times a week to remove the moths' excrement, I'll be horrified if I come out to find a kitty corpse near my car or anywhere in the parking lot. Thoughts?  Advice?

The vinegar concoction might be safer for kitties and wildlife, no?

We found 100s of SLF on this 6’ tall Tree of Heaven. This is a first for us. They were in the 4th instar phase (red). I tried Neem Oil, that really didn’t work. The next day I used Insecticidal Soap spray. That seemed to work, only 10 were there today. They got the special treatment as well.  We have removed all of the TOH plants, which really are annoying weeds

Not to mention the other site, but someone on SOMA Lounge was looking to harvest them for her pet mantis. He (she?) has quite a taste for them...
