Lobster on EBT card

Ronald Reagan used to talk about people buying steak with food stamps. The left loved to deride that as some kind of urban myth.

Well yesterday the person in front of me on the checkout line at Shoprite used an EBT card to purchase lobster. He did not even bother to use a Priceplus card to get a discount. Why bother when the government is paying for the lobster dinner.

So you want even more government oversight?

I though lobsters were food.

Anyway, it's less expensive these days than most other kinds of seafood.

But who needs facts when you've got dogma?

nah, he wants them to eat hamburger helper and cereal.

$6.99 a pound at Millburn Shop Rite this week, according to the circular.

Does this guy eyeball the purchases and payments of every person in front of him in line, or just those with a certain "profile"?

Shoprite lobster sounds like a punishment.

That settles it. I'm quitting my job today and switching over to public assistance. I expect thousands will follow in my footsteps.

The check out person asked if the guy had a PricePlus card (there is a discount with the card) and the guy responded "no, but it does not matter I am paying with my EBT card". That is how I became aware of it. So since the government was paying he did not care about the discount.

Or maybe he wasn't thinking about it because no matter what the source of my money, wouldn't I want to make it go farther with a PricePlus card?

Or maybe the government requires Shoprite offer the lowest available price to anyone paying via EBT.

I'm going with this answer.

Since the EBT card goes in like any other stored value card at the end of the transaction I do not see any way that a PricePlus adjustment could be made at the point of payment.

Well its his loss. Now he has less money in his EBT account!

I hear these new-fangled computer things can be "programmed" or something like that.

“The only time you look in your neighbor's bowl is to make sure that they have enough. You don't look in your neighbor's bowl to see if you have as much as them.” - Louis CK

Geez. Who are you to decide what anyone eats? Maybe it was a special treat, maybe he was a good shopper spotting it for $6.99 per pound or maybe it's absolutely none of your business.

Some people just have the really good fortune to be poor.

Unless you want to make yourself miserable.

If I really wanted to be miserable, I wouldn't think about the tiny amount of my taxes going to buy people food. I'd think about the huge amounts being spent to kill people and blow stuff up.

There have been time that I forgot to give the cashier my PricePlus card and only realized it after the transaction was completed by putting in my credit card. There is no way without going to customer service to retroactively change the price of an item once a card was swiped. So no, he (and the government) paid the non-Priceplus price. I think that is more objectionable than even buying lobster on an EBT card.

Very nice Dave

The statist left loves to talk about how the benefits are not sufficient and at the end of the month people need to skip meals. But they never talk about how with proper budgeting that type of situation would not arise.

I hear they program these computer thingies in advance to do all kinds of stuff

That you think that this guy is representative of anyone other than himself is gross. Should we judge all conservatives based on your behavior, too?

Maybe the cashier presses a button that says "EBT discount."

How dare he?!?!?! I hope you smacked them out of his hand? Poor people eating lobster.....ridiculous!

If you forget your card, they can either look up hours with a phone number or if yiu say you don't have a card, there is button they can press that basically uses a generic card. It is entirely possible this is what happens. And even more possible that it is absolutely no ones business but his if he wants a freakin' lobster for dinner.

I think Zoinks is of the view that people on guv'mint assistance should only eat pink slime for protein.

By the way Zoinks, which wastes of money would suffice to build us some new tunnels - military waste or welfare waste?
