Rogerebert.com posted this list of the best ten films of the decade:
- Tree of Life
- Moonlight
- Inside Llewyn Davis
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Phantom Thread
- The Wolf of Wall Street
- Under the Skin
- Roma
- Get Out
- The Master
Roma?
Llweyn Davis?
I don't think Roger would have agreed. Rest his soul.
(BTW, I've seen all but the first two)
At least Boyhood's not there.
I checked Metacritic and the only review of those two movies that was not overwhelmingly positive was this one:
I was a dissenter about the insanely rave reviews the last Mad Max movie. The Road Warrior is one of my all time faves. It seemed to me that for Fury Road, they said "let's take the climactic road battle scene of TRW and turn it into a whole movie." It was entertaining - I wouldn't say it sucked - but far from great.
And I'm not so sure about the two P.T. Anderson movies either, Phantom Thread and The Master. I'm a big Anderson fan. Boogie Nights and Magnolia are two of my favorite movies, but I didn't quite get these two. I need to re-watch them to see what I may have missed.
Wide range of opinion here.
For example I liked Phantom Thread and did not like "The Master".
Based on some quick googling to refresh my memory, I would throw these movies into the mix for consideration:
Ex Machina
Dunkirk
The Revenant
Inception
Restrepo
Get Out
Interstellar
The Martian
Searching for Sugar Man
Twenty Feet From Stardom
Amazing Grace
I wouldn't necessarily say this list is the "best" in terms of art, but these are some of my favorites:
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Escape from Tomorrow
Hereditary
Inception
Logan Lucky
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The Cabin In The Woods
The Wolf of Wall Street
We're The Millers
Whiplash
Faves that immediately come to mind are Three Billboards, The Revenant, Legend, Rudderless, American Sniper and World War Z.
I did love Under the Skin and Get Out, but here are twelve that came to mind:
A Separation
The Grand Budapest Hotel
November
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
LaLa Land
Guardians of the Galaxy
I, Daniel Blake
Life of Pi
Amour
The White Ribbon
Beasts of No Nation
45 Years
Haven't seen The Irishman yet. I expect I'll want to add it to my list.
Let The Right One In
Moon
Inception
Monsters
The Hurt Locker
The Raid: Redemption
Blade Runner 2049
Under The Skin
The Lego Movie
Paddington and Paddington 2

Shocked and horrified, not one Harry Potter film made the list.
to be fair, most of them are pre-2010. I might have included number 1 as a favorite

He's missing the Robocop remake. What a shame.
The Robocop remake isn't a bad film if you've never seen the original. It's way better than either of the original's sequels.

Are you being sarcastic? I mean, I love the books but the movies are pretty dreadful. I've seen it suggested that HP would really benefit from an HBO 7 Season Game of Thrones style treatment and I think I agree.

Very fond of Let the Right One In, Moon, and The Hurt Locker. The Lego Movie was surprisingly good and clever too.

I was. But I'm big on costume, set design and special effects. And I painted a lot of Sword and Sorcery so I would be happy living at Hogwart's.
But no I didn't expect it to make the MOL top ten.
That said, my movie top ten has a great deal of old old stuff on it.
Still love On The Waterfront.

Well, I think we see eye to eye then. I feel, for the most part, that they nailed the look of the thing and the casting was also, for the most part, dead on. Its just impossible to make a movie series out of a set of books that hinge on detail to such a great degree. By the time we reach Dobby's crucial scene in Hallows (2010), the movie viewer hasn't seen the guy in almost a decade (since Chamber in 2002).
