Wow!  what does soft opening mean?  Dress rehearsal?

Did they have a soft opening today?

It's a diner.  Why is this thread making it seem like such a momentous event?

 Because it's called the"Chit Chat"....

Not sure what you mean here.

It’s a new Diner convieniently located and people are curious to check it out.

I’m a Diner affectionado myself but not sure I’d call a new one opening ‘momentous’...

My first report, after breakfast there with my lovely daughter,,,  The view: VERY nice... Food: Quite good (upscale diner fare)... Prices: Commensurate with the huge investment made to buy & build the place...

HOWEVER: For breakfasts I'll be sticking with The Ritz & Parkwood (despite the distances involved) because (A) comparing the food/price/value factors, Chit Chat is a less attractive option, and (2) Chit Chat 's go-to taters are hash-browns, and do I like my home-fries...

I'm not a huge diner person (don't love the atmosphere, don't do sandwiches or burgers) but I love eggs and a good salad. This actually looks like a place I'd enjoy taking my daughters for a meal when they're in town.

Do they have a liquor license or is it BYO?

thanks Soda. My go to place for breakfasts and quick dinners has become the Livingston Diner -- love the breakfasts, dinners are hot and delicious, though the desserts are not anything like Ritz or Parkwood.

I've always found it odd that people choose an eating place based on view, or say being on the water. Isn't it about who you're with and the meal itself? If you've got nothing to say to each other, then maybe?!?

Just to remind you: Chit Chat's literally around the corner & up the hill from  me, and I still wanna go there if a nice lunch or dinner plan develops (It's a cheapo option vs. the view from Highlawn, right?)... Plus, I can say "Hey! I can see my house from here!"

BTW: Yup, they've gotta bar!

Had breakfast there on Tuesday. Tasty french toast with fig jam and gruyere, and everybody quite friendly. Feel of the place was a little odd to me, though. "Chit Chat" name and the trivia cards on the table to encourage "chit chat" suggest a warm, homey diner hope, yet the decor and physical feel was more like a garish Las Vegas castle or something. Not to make too much of it, as the main thing is that I enjoyed my meal, but just seemed a little odd as far as what it wants to be identity-wise, if that makes sense.

I totally find the decor odd, but I guess it's their theme.

If a diner has a bar, it doesn't really seem like a diner to me anymore.

Then it becomes a bar/restaurant.

No Guinness on tap?    Waste of bar space.

BTW:Those pix are from the Mothership's website. I've not surveyed CCWO's setup, so for all I know they might indeed offer Guinness. I'll check & report back after dinner tonight...

I'm interested in going for the view.  I miss the picture windows at The Top.

I ate there tonight and I wish them well.  Very weird place.  The outside building is like Salem Witches meets bondage club . Macabre, but surrounded by sculptures of perfect frolicking identical children that reminded me of the Crakers from Margret Atwood's MaddAadam trilogy.  The inside is like Beauty and the Beast and some other Disney movies that I avoid. Lots of patterns. Gigantic chandeliers.  Trees and TV's.   The bar is small.  The food is OK.

Everyone should go and try it.  It should be a hit with tourists and it fits in well with other West Orange attractions.

Thanks for that measured endorsement, Nan. I may even agree, but my current status (that of both (A) a resident of the diner's immediate neighborhood & (2) a W.O. taxpayer) impels me to hope that CC's Longest Culinary Waiting Period For Overnight Success status will over time become that of a widely-known landmark, a great addition to the area...

I think it will Soda.  It's VERY unique and will become a cult and family favorite.  West Orange is becoming a destination spot with the zoo, skating rink, golf course, zip line, Edison Museum and reservation.  People can have fun there and then end the day with dinner at this magical place.

BTW: Now that you bring it up, I'd expect the place to be just as successful/controversial as The Boathouse, for many of the same reasons...

Yes, and I'm on the "drinks on the porch" side of that discussion.  But, speaking of fine West Orange restaurants, when is the McDonalds re-opening?  That's my favorite, and best suited to my budget.

BTW: There was an unsubstantiated rumor (on the W.O. 411 FB page) that rather than a Mickey D's, a Chick fil A  will be the new occupant of that site... neither my political nor culinary favorite food outlet...
