The October debate thread (no videos)

This worked out well for the last debate.

Here's a good brief overview:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/10/11/us/politics/october-democratic-debate.html

Who is moderating the debate?

CNN anchor Erin Burnett, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and New York Times national editor Marc Lacey.

Where is the debate?

Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, near the state capital of Columbus.

When is the debate?

It begins at 8 p.m. ET. The CNN/New York Times Democratic Presidential Debate airs live on CNN. You can also listen to it on many local NPR stations.

We will provide live analysis and fact-checking of the debate here on NPR.org through the evening.

Who is in the debate?

Twelve candidates met the October debate requirements, the most appearing together at one time in a debate this year. They are:

Former Vice President Joe Biden; New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker; South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; former HUD Secretary Julián Castro; Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard; California Sen. Kamala Harris; Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar; former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke; Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders; billionaire investor and activist Tom Steyer; Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren; and entrepreneur Andrew Yang.

Read more about how they qualified, and who didn't make the cut.

I think Williamson will be missed as the alternative voice.

Waiting to hear how the overview is anti-Bernie.

[Edited to add] Or worse, has a false equivalency of Bernie with Warren.

jeebus, it was bad enough with 10 people on stage, let alone 12.

I would swap Bennett in for Steyer or Yang. I know he is not colorful but he is smart and reasonable, from a purple state and a senator.  I thought Williamson came out of the blue and then thumbed through an old book of essays, Simple Abundance which came out it in the 90s and her name was mentioned in a September essay. Anyway, I'd like to stick to candidates that have political experience. This recent experiment has not worked out well.

Too many people at this late stage.

I'd definitely ditch Gabbard.  Warren and Sanders would have to kill each other in a knife fight for Gabbard to have any shot at coming in third.  If they have to have a joke candidate I would prefer Gorbo the Clown.

any predictions?  Should be interesting to see how Steyer will separate himself from the pack.  Bernie and Warren will definitely mention his billionaire status it he targets either one of them.

no opening statements - that's good!

Warren cites the Mueller Report as the document that sealed her decision for impeachment.

Bernie uses Ukraine as reason to impeach.

Lots of dry mouth tonight.

Tulsi is contradicting herself on impeachment. Answer is kind of muddled.

Nothing new here so far.

When will the moderators stop this stupid gotcha question about taxes and M4A?

Never I suppose.

And what the hell with the follow-up?

I like Warren, but remain skeptical that M4A is realistic.

Buttigieg is being a disengenuous f*** on M4A. I like him less and less. He is actually kind of dumb on this issue.

Well it's not realistic in the sense that it's not going to get passed for a long time - but not unrealistic as a viable program.

Buttigieg is sounding like a Republican. eff him.

eff you too Amy. I don't think I've heard one good policy proposal from her.

FYI - the m4a conundrum will not be resolved in this debate.

Oh, policy-wise it makes a lot of sense, but I can't see the politics working out (as I've argued in the M4A thread). What I'm curious is, under a Pres. Warren, what happens when M4A doesn't get passed? We can't wait for M4A to get passed to see actual improvements in health care (though on that note, pretty much any Democrat will, at the very least, mean a halt in WH-led attempts to outright make things worse).

Biden sucks. Lying f***

Harris making an important point.

Good interjection by Sanders.

To be fair - reproductive rights is a different issue than M4A. M4A is mostly a fiscal issue. Reproductive rights is not.

Pete has been strong. So has Amy.
