The Turkey Deal

Can someone easily explain what the US got out of the Pence/Pompeo trip?  Is it a "cease fire" or not?

I don't know, but we'll be saving millions of lives, so that must be good.

This “deal” is so unpalatable to Republicans and the military that it might be what tips the scales in the Senate on impeachment.

Trump says it's "the ultimate solution" -

I have been in favor of our pulling out our troops. But the way this was handled was so absolutely inept.

You would think we could have at least demanded something of benefit to the Kurds.

Not a cease fire. And Turkey's borders just got extended by 18 miles.

After it's "cleaned out" of Kurds.

I'm almost always in favor of bringing our military home.  But even I know you don't make a snap decision on Sunday and start the withdrawal on Monday.  Ending a conflict means negotiating a cease fire and a long-term peace.  Trump had zero interest in a real plan to bring the troops home.

jeebus.  He keeps letting those phrases slip.  He's like this guy:

No love for Erdogan but I wish many others would react to Trump this way:

every time I see the title of this thread, I can't help but think of this turkey deal

Is that a raw turkey?

Think I'm gonna barf.

I read a comment about Christie yesterday, along the lines of:

Chris Christie dodged a bullet when Jared froze him out.  Otherwise, he could easily have been in Mulvaney's shoes.

What Trump doesn't understand is (apart from feckin EVERYTHING) is that he just endorsed ethnic cleansing of the Kurds he's trying to save with a single tweet. When Erdogan talks about defeating terrorism, he means eradicate the Kurds.

It's in viewing the responses to moves like this that I think help distinguish truly anti-war folks from those who more narrowly only oppose American military action. From a justice and peace perspective, there's not much to admire in how Trump's gone about things here, even if you think the ultimate end of reducing US military presence in Syria is a good one.

This will go down as the year the president pardoned a Turkey a month early.

I'm really chilled (not in a good way) by Lindsay Graham's about-face, and new-found approval. What has T got on him???  What on earth is there to be 'optimistic' about with this 'out of the box thinking'?!

And can someone please explain to me (this is a real question) how anyone can have military aircraft in a demilitarised zone? Isn't the point to keep weapons and military tools/vehicles/personnel out??

I think it's less than what he's got on him and possibly what he has promised him. Maybe an appointment as a judge. I would think that would appeal to him. Can't imagine him wanting to be a Senator if the Dems gain seats. The Senate has confirmed 152 of Trump's picks. Those are lifetime seats. One article said one in four judges are Trump appointees.

No matter what he does his base will stick with him and try to get him 4 more years. His mark on the courts will last decades.

Trump is taking a victory lap - sounds like he saved thousands of Kurds and sanctions to Turkey will be lifted! We will no longer fight wars in the "bloodstained sand".

Richard Engel, who is actually on the ground there for MSNBC, pointed out in response that the U.S. military still has the same anti-ISIS mission there, except now the Kurds who were our allies now hate our guts.

There are rumors about Graham which if true would be detrimental to him considering his constituency is conservative southern. Especially if there is a video.

Huh?? Now you’re sending more troops (and Kurds) to eaters Syria??
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/24/us-military-syria-tanks-oil-fields

Does anyone know how to read a map anymore?! This isn’t like catching a cab in the middle of a US city, or house-sitting in the suburbs.
