There's a flash flood watch associated with the thunderstorms forecast for this afternoon and tonight. Heavy rain from localized storms may cause low lying areas and poorly drained roads to flood.
Thunderstorms later this afternoon (after 3pm) through tonight may cause locally heavy downpours with areas of 1 -2 inches of rain. This could lead to flooding and road ponding in areas that often experience flooding.
Details of the watch in the first comment below.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE TONIGHT...
The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a
* Flash Flood Watch for all of northeast New Jersey, including the following areas, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, and Hudson counties.
* From this afternoon through late tonight.
* Showers and thunderstorms with an approaching warm front will increase in coverage this afternoon and evening, with the rain becoming heavy at times from late today into this evening. Excessive runoff could lead to flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas. Some fast- responding small streams could approach or exceed bank full.
* Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is likely, and local amounts up to 3 inches are possible. Highest rainfall rates of between 1/2 to 1 inch are possible this evening.
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
Thank you for posting this! I saw it just a few minutes later and was able to make a (hopefully advantageous) flight change before United sent out a notification of waived change fees, so I got in ahead of the crowd. That being said, I am now sitting in the airport looking at the pouring rain and the new, earlier flight is also delayed. So far, I think I'm still better off being on a delayed 3:30pm flight rather than a delayed 8:30pm flight. We shall see.
This evening's Prospect Street walk through is advertised as rain or shine. We shall see.
Max, you were right on. Thanks.
Off by 15 minutes (rain started at 2:45) but I'll take it.
FWIW, that was 1.5 inches in 45 minutes
3rd Street NJT underpass was flooded. Parker is clear.
FLASH FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 9:45PM
Although we are in the warned area, the heavy rain appears to be headed just west of us. Nonetheless, please be careful. Do NOT drive into any area that appears to be flooded. Do not try to cross, in a car or on foot, any flowing water, no matter how shallow.
