Tutor for handwriting

I would like to try to find someone to come to my house and help my elementary ages son with his handwriting. I contacted Achieve but they work with high school aged students.

Does anyone know a resource that I could look into? Or someone that does this?

My understanding is that this is often done by Occupational Therapists (probably OTs that actually specialize in this area). You may be able to get a referral from your pediatrician.

If you Google "occupational therapy for handwriting" you'll get loads of information. I'm sure others can weigh in with specific recommendations for an OT.

Yes, thank you. I know all about that. My son even did that a few years back. He also took handwriting classes at one point.

I waited all summer for an OT evaluation appointment at the only place my insurance company accepted as in network. Unfortunate circumstances occurred that I had to cancel the appointment. I have been unable to reschedule as the facility says they are too busy and not taking any new appointments.

I was hoping to find someone to help him work on how to hold the pencil and how to try and make him more comfortable with it all.

I'm not an OT, but I did work in a setting where I could observe some of them. One thing I remember was that they would work on strengthening the pincer grip as something that would make holding a pencil easier. Having a child pick up grains of rice, of lentils, or other small, hard objects was one thing they did. You might be able to mix rice and lentils and have your child sort them into different piles. Or you could substitute other objects that might be more interesting to him, while you are trying to locate someone to work with him on a regular basis, if that's something you want to do.

Here's a link to a site with lots of other ideas to improve the strength in this area: http://therapystreetforkids.com/fm-pincergrasp.html
