Severe Thunderstorms Watch this Afternoon May 16

Saturday, May 14th

Interesting May weather this weekend.

Generally, warm and humid.

Today, Saturday, 50/50 chance of showers this afternoon and evening. There is also a very slight chance of a modest thundershower. Interesting to note that these showers are from the remains of last week's storm circling back through the area.

Tomorrow, Sunday, much the same but less so, with a slight chance of showers and a non-zero but really small chance of thunder.

Monday, afternoon showers likely, and thunder is more likely, too, although not certain. A line of showers is likely to move through quickly Monday afternoon, with embedded thunderstorms and a slight chance of severe thunderstorms, with high winds being the most serious concern. While unlikely, cannot rule out the possibility of a small tornado somewhere along the line.

Below is the NWS Storm Prediction Center's Severe Weather Outlook for Monday, showing the area in the northeastern US that is at a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in yellow.

I guess that means no lunar eclipse for us. LOL

I am mixed on this. On one hand, I would have liked to see and photo it. O.T.O.H., it would have meant driving to L.B.I. to be there at 11;30 or so and then drive back home.

Sunday, May 15

Forecast remains on track.

Slight chance of showers this afternoon, chance of showers and maybe a bit of thunder tonight.

Showers likely Monday afternoon, with a chance of thunderstorms and a slight chance of a severe thunderstorm with gusty winds, heavy rain, and maybe small hail.

Conditions might be ripe for a severe thunderstorm outbreak tomorrow evening. I always take these things seriously.

Thanks Max. I just changed an appointment that is an hour drive away to next week (instead of Mon night). I don't want to drive in a bad storm.

Monday May 16th

Forecast is on track for likely thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with a possibility of severe thunderstorms

Warm and not quite as humid today, high 75°

A line of showers and thunderstorms is likely to pass through the area from west to east in front of a cold front this afternoon. Most likely risk with the storms is gusty winds, with heavy rain and small hail a possibility. Cannot completely rule out the possibility of a small tornado, although highly unlikely.

Timing: showers possible today. Heavier weather after 2pm, most likely timing between 5 and 7pm, with some lingering showers and another possible thunderstorm until 9pm. Slight chance of showers before midnight.

For those like me, who don't know the different categories.

To further clarify, and align with the chart Yahoo posted, the SPC has us in an 'enhanced risk zone today

The NWS has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for our area until 8:00 pm.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are conducive to the formation of severe weather. The NWS will issue as Warning if severe weather actually develops

Not over yet but fingers crossed.  We are still in the zone until about 7:30 this evening when the front finally clears through.

Will we be able to play a softball game this evening in Parsippany?

Maybe.  Maybe a mid-game rain delay.

Not sure they should have postponed the Met game.

If you hit a ball, a tornado picks it up and drops it past the fence, that’s still a home run, right?

Only if there is still a fence.
