What is NJ transit doing with expired tickets?

I still have some expired NJ tickets (1/31/19 expiration) to Penn Station.  Are the conductors taking them?  Charging the extra 10% ?  Please share your experience. Thanks.

you can use them until the end of February

I used mine this week no problem.

I discovered that I had six of them, but I've now used four this month and will use the last two on Friday.  They extended the expiration date from 1/31 to 2/28 at some point.

After the end of the month they said they will no longer accept or issue refunds.  The conductor said they can not just charge the extra 10%.

Arguably they can, they just don't want to.

I can understand not wanting the conductors to deal with the 10%, but why not allow refunds at the ticket window or exchanging them there for new tickets (and paying the difference)?

Because it's NJ Transit.

that’s really dumb that you can’t exchange them and pay the difference for a new ticket.

What type of tickets have expiration dates that you are discussing.

I have old single ride tickets that don’t show an expiration date and which the ticket agent said didn’t expire.

The single ride tickets that came with the 10% discount had an expiration date on them on the front of the ticket.

I believe that they are from the recent period when there were a lot of problems with service and they were compensating by offering tickets at a discounted price.  Of course there are still a lot of problems with service.  They could garner a lot of goodwill without a lot of financial hit if they would just continue to honor these tickets, at least for another few months.  But I'm down to only one in my wallet, so I may still get a chance to use it.

at the very least, they should honor the value paid and collect the fare difference.

I agree, but I understand that is not what is happening.
