What Kindle to buy for older person with eye problems

I have a cousin who is 84 and wants to get a Kindle because she has eye problems and has a lot of trouble reading.  With the Kindle (as you probably know) it is easy to bump up the type size.

There is a very confusing array of Kindle's available. I presume she needs one that is backlit but I'm not sure what else.  I have a Kindle but it's a Kindle 2 and ancient by Kindle standards so I wouldn't recommend that.

I also post this in science and technology.

ETA: I also just realized that I should say that she does not want a Kindle Fire. She does not need a tablet and wants something easy to use that does not have a steep learning curve.

Would your cousin consider an older iPad? The old minis in particular are excellent with the Kindle app, and you retain functionality to do other things as well.

There is a new mini that came out, but if your cousin is not looking to spend a bunch of dough the older one works great.

I had a paperwhite kindle but frankly if I can have one device that “does it all” it’s hard to argue for more stuff next to the bed or in the bag.

you might want to investigate Daisy Readers. I don't know much about them, but understand this is an international system (I think Swedish?) designed for for people with complex vision issues all the way down to low and no useable vision.

The reader will read aloud text, and handles graphics and charts etc in a way that other software tends not to, so it's less confusing for the user. You might find your library knows more.

I just upgraded from a kindle 2 to a paperwhite version.  I miss the next button on the site - you just tap the screen now.  As far as type size adjustment - you tap the top of the screen.  Will post an image in a minute.

The backlight is great - which the 2 didn't have - and you can see with the settings - you can even go larger and bolder then what I have set.

(I also removed the duplicate thread - most everyone see the all discussions page and very few people have either of those categories blocked - it's best to concentrate all replies on a topic to one thread.)

Thanks for your answers.  My cousin already has an iPad that she doesn't use.

I don't know about Daisy readers but she wants to be able to read not have the book read to her. My Kindle 2 will read the book to me and I presume the other Kindles do also.  But reading is a different experience than hearing a book.  I love audiobooks but often just want to read.  The Kindle is also set up in such a way that it is incredibly easy to download books.

@jamie  Which paperwhite did you get?

I have an older Paperwhite that I'm no longer using in case it is of interest.  I think the Paperwhite is easier on the eyes than most other options, but I have switched to using my iPhone or iPad most of the time.  (Too many devices!)

I like the Paperwhite better than an iPad for reading. Much less eyestrain.

Another suggestion (which I acknowledge is nonresponsive): Is your cousin interested in Audible books? My 84YO mom devours them and recently learned how to transmit books (and music and phone calls) from her iPhone directly to her hearing aids.
