I had a working TV set (one of those "kitchen" TVs from days of yore) that I literally couldn't give away to anyone, including charities. I was told to bring it to recycling -- in my town there's a special section for electronics that still work (I don't know what they do with them, sell them for parts?)
I believe Unique thrift stores will still take them...they are affiliated with a Lupus foundation so you get a tax deduction. There is also furniture assist in Kenilworth.
you can also just try freecycle
I don't think goodwill takes old style TVs anymore...only the new flat panel
I had one of those old rear-projection TVs. It was ancient, it was HUGE! and the picture was no good anymore. I wasn't sure how to dispose of it. I wasn't even sure how I'd get it out of the house; I think it took three guys to get it in. So, I took a Philips screwdriver and a speed-wrench (aka a hammer) and spent two hours taking the damn thing apart. It was actually fun. I must have removed 120 screws. It had a big mirror in it that projected the image from the three colored projectors onto the screen. Finally I had it broken down to its electronic, glass, metal and plastic components in separate piles on my living room floor. I hauled them down to my car and couldn't fit them all in so I made two trips to the dump and recycling center and threw each pile into its respective recycling area. In the end it was very satisfying.
Unique had been selling 20 inch for about $15 a couple years ago and 13 inch for about $7...
We had 5 this past summer that I posted on Craigslist and Maplewoodonline classifieds for Free and got a lot of responses and they took them all.
Plug it in and tune into the next GOP debate. Then sell a brick to the highest bidder.

We have a few old Sony tv's that are stored in areas around the house. SIGH. They all still work and when in vogue, were top of the line sets. I don't want a yard sale; I just want to rid of them. If I can sell them, fine. Don't even know what they could be used for as their pre-HD and have "fat backs" as I call them.
Ideas?
