Whats Warmer? A Coat From Lands End or NorthFace? archived

Oct 22, 2010 at 1:05pm
need to get a new winter coat. not a long one. maybe just past the butt. preferably waist length. i like both lands end and northface. just want something warm.
Depends on the coat, obviously.

Land' End shows the temp rating, so you will know how warm the coat will be.

The North Face I have tried on in dept. stores are not superwarm, so if there is a style you prefer, I would def. compare the weight of the fill.

that's what i like about lands end! i have a fleece type one that no longer fits. hasn't for a few years but i can't bring myself to give it away so it sits in my closet.

Also, pricing is much more wallet friendly than North Face.

I have Columbia winter jackets bought at Kohls in different sizes... They last forever

LL bean was having a sale last week. I don't know if any sale coats are left. If you like Lands End you will like LL Bean. If you have their credit card you get free shipping.

North Face is extremely expensive. And, for that kind of coat, you can't just compare brands.

If you want guaranteed warmth - get LL Bean's Baxter State Parka.

I'm a big fan of Lands End - have always been happy with their stuff, and their service.

LL Bean. Full disclosure, I'm from Maine, grew up 10 minutes from Beans. Grew up nearby before it was a favorite of preppies, but was a favorite of real Mainers who needed real winter gear. But I digress. As others have said (about the brand that must not be named), LL Bean has different coats for different temperatures and a clear description about the differences. Unfortunately because there is a store in NJ, we get to pay sales tax for online and catalogue purchases. Another aside, I found my LL Bean boots from college, which means from 30 years ago. Found them in my mother's attic. Brought them down and presented them to a 15 year old who was thrilled to have them. They are made to last.

where is the nj store? i like to try coats on before i buy them.

I strongly recommend Columbia, for quality, style, and value. (Plus I worked there for 20 years)

I have found Pacific Trails coats to be cozy and lighter weight and smartly designed (good pockets in a variety of places, cuffs that can be snugged against the wind, fleece-lined hoods, etc).

The LL Bean store is in Marlton, NJ (Burlington County---approx. 2 hrs from here)

It is nearer Philly than NYC. I like LLBean stuff for durability and warmth.

2 years ago I bought a down coat from Land's End. I needed it for walking the dog , and standing outside at her playdates. I used to ski, and in another life I worked at an upscale ski shop. I know warm coats. This coat from Land's End is the warmest coat I have ever owned. And it is light weight, too. It does make me look like the Michelin Man---but I'm so old, I prefer warmth to style.

There's free shipping through December for all LL Bean purchases.

and you can try on Lands End at Sears.

Just as a point of reference, my last LLBean order was not charged sales tax. There is no tax on clothing in NJ.

that's where i buy the little lands end i have.

going to check kohls tonight. have a gift card that needs to be used.

I have the squall parka coat from Land's End. It is the warmest coat I have ever owned. In fact, I refer to it as my "refrigerator" coat. I have gone for walks in it when the temperature has been in the teens, with wind chills in the single digits. It really did keep me warm. In fact, I was sweating! The one shown here does not have a detachable faux fur hood trim, which my coat has. I assume it's because my coat is older.

I used to have the LL Bean Baxter State parka. I found it to actually be too warm. I wore it so rarely that I eventually gave it away. I agree - as warm as it gets.

thanks! have to check today's mail for a coupon!

thanks for all the suggestions!

I looked inside my Pacific Trail parka and discovered it is a subsidiary of London Fog. I think I've found them at places like Macy's, Kohls or similar.

I just did a quick search and found they are also carried by Burlington Coat, JC Penney and a number of sporting goods stores. http://www.pacifictrail.com/retail.htm

I actually just picked one up at Unique Thrift last week for $9.99, gently used as my old one had gotten (yay!) too big plus the little handle on the zipper broke off last year in a way I can't repair unless I get the whole zipper replaced, after about 10 years of use.

Bills Army Navy in Short Hills on Morris Trnpk discounts Columbia.

so i go to kohls to look for a coat. never made it to the coat dept. ended up buying six pairs of pants, a shirt and belt. sigh...
