Why the sudden change in our military leaderhip?

Joint Chiefs Chairman Dunford is being replaced by Gen. Milley even though Dunford's term is not expired. Also, the Chief of Naval Operations and the Air Force Chief of Staff may be leaving.

What gives? Trump upset because they were nominated and appointed by Obama? Or is Trump trying to get control over the military to the point that whatever he requests will be honored, be it some war crime or violation of Posse Comitatus?

We assumed, the military meeting legal and constitutional requirements, would be a check on Trump. Can we still assume that?

To me, perhaps the unwritten story is the dismissal of — the abrupt ending of Joe Dunford's chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His term doesn't expire until next September 30th. They announced his appointment, his successor today, which puts him in a terrible position.

The word is that both Mattis and Dunford were pushing for the chief of staff, the general of the Air Force to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and they didn't prevail. General Milley was chosen, so that is really a — it will be a real upset. Dunford will be gone.

There are stories that the chief of naval operations will leave, the Air Force general will leave. So, there's going to be a major, major turnover in military leadership.

Maybe I'm naive, but I am less worried about career people being given promotions (such as this case) as opposed to his bringing in people out of nowhere (such as Fox News). Milley already is at the top of the uniformed hierachy and the reality is, Trump already has "control" of the military.

Plus, the chairman of the joint chiefs is an advisor to the president. Does he really listen to anyone's advice from any department?

Let's hope that Bolton isn't behind this.

The military has "limited" control from the president when needed as was done near the end of Nixon's tenure with nuclear weapon access. They would not have limited Nixon where the military then composed of die hard Nixon loyalists.

The worrying is why was the Chairman's term cut short? Its just not done, until now.

Didn't think of that. Its easier starting a foreign adventure when the military is all in. There would be no dissenting advice to congress or through retired military which can publicly espouse the dissent of active military.

But since you're so smart, give me a reason why Trump disrespected the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs by ending his term prematurely, effectively firing him. And why have the CNO and CS of the Air Force have indicated they are very unhappy over this. Its just not done.

Just as there is no bottom to the Republican party. Who would have 10 years ago thought that Republicans would strip powers from governors simply because Democrats are elected. As was done in NC and is being done in Wisconsin. I'm sure if they could they would have eliminated the office of governor. Not being able to, they instead stripped the office.
