Years of the Maplewood NJ Senior (Older Adult)

Thanks,Joan. The link is somewhat helpful. It seems Love Never Dies will be at 7 PM tonight. I'll try again closer to that time.

I saw the 2 pm performance.  Enjoy it at 7 pm.  If you use Use the "remind me" function,  you will get an email just before the performance starts.

Now it says 7 pm UK time so we will see. I’m glad you were able to view it.

I am so sorry you are having this problem.  If Love Never Dies does not work, check out the other performances on the link I sent you.  A number of them are really tempting.

Galileo:  Were you able to watch the program?

Joan, I didn't but thank you anyway.

Hello Everyone! Just a reminder to wear face coverings when you go out. If you don't have a mask, a bandana, scarf or apparently, scuba gear will suffice.

What is “Zoom”?

You may be hearing about events being held through “Zoom,” or “Facebook live” or “Facetime”. These are all programs and computer apps that you can use through your computer, tablet or smartphone to join events remotely. All you need is a device and internet access. If you want to take part in an event - for example, the new programming listed below - turn on your device, click the link and you will be “allowed” into the meeting or event. You can see the speaker, and they will be able to see you. At the beginning of the events we are sponsoring, we will give instructions for new users and reminders about how to participate. So please, check it out!

What is “YouTube”?

YouTube is an online video-sharing platform that allows users to upload, view, rate, share, comment on videos. It offers a wide variety of user-generated content. Most content is uploaded by individuals, but many organizations, including the South Orange Library, have a channel they load with recordings. You can go to one of your favorite websites and if you see a YouTube link, click it to see what they have. This is the YouTube icon:

or

Or, go to www.youtube.com and search for what you are interested in. There is a lot on YouTube - some good, some not so good. But if you search or follow links from known sources, there is a lot for you to see.

Calling all Seniors

When will we go back to “normal?”

You have probably seen a lot on the news in the past week about states “reopening.” Keep in mind that NJ , especially our corner of it, has had a much larger number and per capita rate of COVID-19 than other parts of the country have seen so far.

Governor Murphy recently announced The Road Back, Restoring Economic Health Through Public Health, which focusses on 6 principles:

    1. Demonstrate Sustained Reductions in New COVID-19 Cases and Hospitalizations
    2. Expand Testing Capacity
    3. Implement Robust Contact Tracing
    4. Secure Safe Places and Resources for Isolation and Quarantine
    5. Execute a Responsible Economic Restart
    6. Ensure New Jersey's Resiliency

Census Census Census

Maplewood and South Orange are way ahead of other towns in the area on our Census 2020 responses, but we still need about 30% of our residents to fill it out. So if you haven’t yet - fill it out! Tell your friends, your family, your neighbors. Everyone in every town needs to be counted on to help plan, allocate federal funding and provide services. Go to https://2020census.gov, call (844) 330-2020 or mail in the card you received a few weeks ago.

Exercise Classes Move Online

The Shows Must Go On!

I apologize for the confusion on the link to last week’s performance. Each week, you can go to YouTube and enter “The shows must go on” in the search area, or follow this link for this week’s performance: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdmPjhKMaXNNeCr1FjuMvag

Following up an already-fantastic lineup of Andrew Lloyd Webber classics, The Shows Must Go On will air Andrew Lloyd Webber — The Royal Albert Hall Celebration this Friday, May 1 at 2 PM (EDT). The recording will remain accessible for 48 hours. This 1998 concert event offered a musical tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber in celebration of his 50th birthday, featuring music from all of his major musicals including Cats, Sunset Boulevard, The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, and more. Dozens of stars took the stage to celebrate the composer legend, including Elaine Paige, Glenn Close, Sarah Brightman, Tina Arena, Antonio Banderas, Donny Osmond, and Michael Ball, among others.

From Cathy Rowe,  May 1

Hello Everyone,

The weather looks promising this weekend and some restrictions are being loosened on state and county parks. However, the need for safety still comes first and we must follow precautions while enjoying outdoors. The Maplewood and South Orange municipal parks have been open throughout the closures for passive and no-contact recreation, such as walking or jogging, doing some exercise by yourself or with your family. Playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, and fields remain closed in both towns. Use this quick guide from Maplewood Recreation for what is and is not allowed in local, county and state parks:

Allowable Activities

  • Hiking
  • Walking
  • Running
  • Jogging
  • Biking
  • Birding

Remaining Closed

  • Picnic Areas (no picnicking)
  • Playgrounds
  • Exercise Stations
  • Swimming
  • Restrooms/Pavilions
  • Basketball & Tennis Courts

No organized or contact sports or activities will be allowed and social distancing of 6 feet should be maintained. When you follow social distancing, you are not only helping yourself, but your family, friends, and even the people you never think you overlap with but with whom you cross paths every day.

The more we follow social distancing measures, the sooner we will get through this!

COVID Resource Guide

The Community Coalition on Race has put together a comprehensive guide to resources during COVID -19. It is available on their website, but also in print form. Agree with commongooder, once 2 becomes one through divorce or widowhood it is impossible to foot the property tax bill. My son is a senior in HS and I am trying to hang on for him but the taxes are so hard to pay. I love maplewood I love my home but just can’t do it.

commongooder said:

With all due respect, how age friendly can Maplewood and South Orange be when we our population of seniors is decreasing over time, on top of which, their exit hurts both towns economically and qualitatively. None of our town leaders got behind a plan to give each public school student in the state the same amount of aid, a plan which would, if implemented, have decreased taxes for the average South Orange homeowner nearly $4,000, with all that money going to the school district. A win-win for taxpayers and our kids. And the surest way to keep more seniors from selling their homes and leaving, which usually results in a family with kids moving in, leading to even larger enrollments and more costs for the schools and for taxpayers. When will South Orange and Maplewood put some effort into helping seniors help South Orange and Maplewood. Do we no longer focus on the common good, but rather, satisfying the needs of one segment of the population?

Being able to afford to remain in Maplewood or South Orange after retirement and/or death of one's spouse is the single most difficult aspect of making our community truly age friendly.  The options that the age friendly initiative has been able to come up with to date have only begun to tackle this problem.  Some of these are only available to seniors. For municipality-based assistance  programs, the town's applicable ordinance will set age, income, and any other qualifying criteria.  For State and Not For Profit programs check with the organization providing the service.

There are real property tax assistance programs available from the State of  NJ.  The most generous is the senior freeze which is available to seniors and the disabled who meet the eligibility criteria.  The Homestead Rebate is income based.  The veterans and widows of veterans program is based on dates of service in the armed forces.  Check with your town's finance officer for more information.

Maplewood has a forgivable home maintenance loan program; while CCR offers help with external home repairs. Check with whichever might apply for further information. Essex County also offers home maintenance assistance.

Both towns will allow homeowners to rent a room in their house.  Number of persons the homeowner can rent to vary with the town and other conditions may apply.  If you have a spare room and are willing to do this, check with your town for their requirements.

More long term, Maplewood is in the process of passing an ordinance that would permit the construction/renting of an ADU on most properties in town.  I don't know where SO is on drafting a similar ordinance.

Please share any additional ideas you might have to this thread so we can start a dialog.  We need more solutions in this area.

We are pleased to let our residents know that the Property Tax Reimbursement program commonly known as “Senior Freeze” has been reinstated in the State’s budget and encourage eligible residents to apply.

The income limits for the program have been increased. You may be eligible if:

  • You were age 65 or older as of December 31, 2018 or receiving disability benefits
  • You have lived in NJ as a homeowner or renter, continuously, since December 31, 2008 or earlier
  • You have owned and lived in your house since December 31, 2015 or earlier
  • Your 2018 property taxes were paid in full before June 1, 2019 and 2019 property taxes were paid in full before June 1, 2020
  • Your income did not exceed $89,013 in 2018 and $91,505 in 2019l.

Previous applicants should have received an application (the blue book) by mail. If you do not have one, applications can be picked up at your towns’ tax office, printed from the NJ Division of Taxation website at https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/relief.shtml or by calling 1-800-882-6597.

Assemblywoman Mila Jasey has arranged for the annual information session on this important program to be held virtually on Wednesday, October 21 at 4pm. NJ Division of Taxation staff will explain eligibility, the application process and answer your questions via Zoom or by phone:
