On Tuesday, Bloomberg Government produced a bombshell report that points to the massive economic consequences a Republican House would bring for Americans.

If Republicans gain a majority following next month’s elections, the outlet reported, they plan to use a future increase or suspension of the debt ceiling as leverage to force through “top priorities” like seismic cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other social safety net spending. Failure to act on the debt ceiling would result in an economic catastrophe, experts say.

There has been shockingly little coverage of this development given its significance. It earned a scattering of mentions in publications including New York magazine. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and MSNBC’s Chris Hayes detailed the stakes on his show Wednesday night.

"Zone" refers to the zones used on the leaf collection map.  Recycling has been divided into two separate pick-ups, one each on alternating weeks.  Week 1 will be for paper and cardboard.  Week 2 will be for plastic, glass, and metal containers.  For additional information on what may be recycled under the new program, go to https://www.maplewoodnj.gov/government/public-works/recycling-and-waste-disposal

I know this discussion is usually for local events.
I thought I’d share a couple of recent exciting achievements by older Aussie women, that you might not have heard about.
The first is a 96-years-old distance racewalker who holds world records - not because she’s the only competitor, but because she’s so fit and so fast

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-01/96-year-old-race-walker-heather-lee-keeps-smashing/101820380

The second item is about 2 ocean-racing sailors - a retired teacher and a retired nurse - who participated in the recent classic Sydney to Hobart yacht race. This starts on Boxing Day (26 Dec); they sailed for 5 days, coming in to Hobart just as the fireworks were starting for New Year. (They arrived 11:42pm-ish)  After 4 hours sleep, they were off again!

Some health & fitness goals to think about, perhaps, for 2023? Certainly these ladies have shown you don’t have to be young or in the ‘ideal’ body to have a goal and then achieve it. cheese

    Joan,

Addressing you as the de facto monitor of this thread.  I've read your suggestions above and the recently delivered circulars from SOMA and SOMA Adult School.  Meh.

But here's something that caught my attention this morning.  NPR had a ditty about an Ann Arbor meeting that I recall was called the Ann Arbor Senior Happy Hour.  Held weekly on Friday evening and seemed to be a social get together and dancing party.  I would imagine that that there are cocktails and music involved.  It sounded more interesting to me than the previously mentioned sources.  Is there anything like that available locally?

Mr. Maplewood: The South Orange Elks Club has gatherings like that on Friday evenings at the Elks Lodge on Prospect Street.  This is where Rent Party got its start.  They have a bar and live music.  Since they have a club license, non-members would most likely have to go as the guest of a member.

Edited to add:  There are several reasons why town-sponsored organizations serving seniors would not be able to sponsor the type of program you describe under present circumstances:

    1. Many seniors no longer drive after dark.  Senior transportation only operates weekdays from mid morning to early/mid afternoon.  Getting seniors to/from the venue would be a problem.  This is why most of the town-sponsored senior gatherings are held in the morning or are luncheons starting at noon.

    2. Lack of liquor license.  The Elks Lodge is one of the few locations suitable for the kind of gathering you describe where alcohol-based cocktails can be served.  Town sponsored senior gatherings are held at the Senior Center or DeHart Community Center and feature coffee, tea, or sparling water for this reason.

    3. Inclusiveness.  Holding a town-sponsored event of the sort you describe on a Friday evening would exclude Shabbas observers who are likely to be attending worship services or family gatherings at that time.

This doesn't mean that we couldn't overcome these current restrictions if the above issues could be resolved.  However, before lobbying for such programming, it would be necessary to know that there was sufficient demand.  Any thoughts you might have on making this a reality would be appreciated.

    Joan,

Thanks for your response.  I understand that the town can not sponsor a meeting featuring alcohol.  I'm not an Elk, nor can I think of a member who would invite me.  But perhaps some commercial entity might give it a try, possibly one without a liquor license.  And I also understand that Friday night could present some problems, so maybe another day fits better.  But it appears that Ann Arbor is working with Friday regardless of the day, and probably consideration for seniors with transportation problems.

You may be surprised to learn that there are members of the Elks who post on MOL.  You likely have off line friends and neighbors who belong too.  That said, they may have some events open to the public or you may be able to contact them and get an invite to see what the club does. It is worth a try.

    Crazy

That's my idea.  Anybody else, please contribute.

The Maplewood Seniors Advisory Committee has an opening for a member of any age who lives in Maplewood and would be interested in working to help older Americans age in place. To join, you would need to complete a volunteer application (available on line or at the Town Clerk's Office) and, if chosen, be appointed by the Maplewood Township Committee. Appointment is for a renewable three year term.  Anyone interested can send me a PM here on MOL or post questions to this thread.

Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR)
A new state program, the Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR), provides up to $1,500 in relief for eligible homeowners and up to $450 in relief for eligible renters.
This program provides property tax relief to New Jersey residents who owned or rented their principal residence (main home) on October 1, 2019, and met these income requirements:
A household income of under $150,000 will receive a $1,500 property tax benefit
A household income between $150,000 and $250,000 will receive a $1,000 property tax benefit.
Renters with incomes up to $150,000 will receive $450 to help offset rent increases caused by increasing property taxes.
ANCHOR replaces the Homestead Benefit program and will be distributed as a direct deposit or check instead of a credit. All payments will be going out in late spring.
