Big Wreck: But For The Sun (highly recommended, one the best in their impressive catalog)
New Pornographers: In the Morse Code of Brake Lights (trumps the previous two releases)
Rembrandts: Via Satellite (yes, them. A bit derivative but worth a listen)
Foxhall Stacks: The Coming Collapse
Dream Theater, Distance Over Time. If you like that kinda thing.
Wow, Big Wreck...haven't thought about "The Oaf" or Thornley stuff in a long time. Must check out.
Ever have those bands you hear one album from and love, but somehow decide you don’t need another? For whatever reason, that definitive release for you is enough? New Pornographers, whose debut I bought on spec when it came out and immediately swooned over, are one of those bands for me.
Big Wreck, a new one to me, goes on my list. I’ll check out the others, too.
(I mean, why do I own, say, several Sloan CDs but only one Spoon, even though I like the Spoon a whole lot? I don’t know; it just seems like all I need.)
Billie Eilish: Grammys for album of the year, song of the year, best new artist.
Noted.

When the seminal "alt country" band Uncle Tupelo first split up into Wilco and Son Volt, one could be forgiven into thinking that Son Volt would be the winner on the strength of their first album "Trace", which I still think is great. But they fizzled whereas Jeff Tweedy and Wilco produced a whole lot of good stuff for years.
...And to the assembled power pop fraternity, this will not disappoint:

I don’t buy much new music anymore, but a few CDs I got recently with Christmas gift cards are so good I figured I’d start a threat in the hope that others, too, would share their favorites from the past year to give me more to think about.
Mine, in no particular order:
Purple Mountains
Raphael Saadiq: Jimmy Lee
Jenny Lewis: On the Line
The Highwomen
The Minus 5: Stroke Manor
Yola: Walk Through Fire
One that has the potential to grow on me:
Big Thief: U.F.O.F.
One that’ll go into the Morrow sale donation pile:
Vampire Weekend: Father of the Bride
