Abuse Testimony, but BOE Reappoints CHS Coach Anyway!

A great coach once told me this equation

Coach = Teacher + Role Model

Its not easy to live up to, but its what the most successful and best coaches will aspire to.

I agree completely.

And one other thing: You should want to play FOR your coach, not IN SPITE OF your coach.

I've also heard terrible things about his coaching style...probably won't ever change. The " Good old guys" rarely do

Corey oh oh

Kind of timely, my family just started watching Coaching Bad with Ray Lewis on Spike. It is almost like Rehab with Dr Drew. It is a group of coaches, make and female, different levels and sports, who have anger issues and have gotten in trouble or lost their jobs for it.

Thread drift. I find it odd that the host of a show about anger management in sports is someone that went on trial for murder and settled with the family of one of the victims.

What becomes obvious watching the show is that people are like this for various and deepseated reasons, and it is a very difficult and involved process for them to change, when though they risk losing jobs and their families if they don't. If you have a coach who doesn't believe he is abusive, and the CHS Coach clearly believes he is not, the probability that he will change is exactly zero.

@Yahooyahoo, strange bedfellows, indeed!!

In this case many have spoken up but no action has been taken. The baseball coaches need to go, before the season starts. The facts are corraborated and irrefutable. Those who are effected by this do not understand why the coaches were unanimously approved.

I don't understand it either. I find it very troubling. Good kids, strong athletes, strong families........very credible (IMHO).

Unfortunately, this abusive and spiteful coach has been doing this for years. He has his buddy the AD (both are friends) protecting him.

I'm just surprised it took this long. KUDOS to the parents in bringing this to light.

Been there. :-(

Why is it that folks like you who know nothing about a situation can't resist showing off ignorance about it?

Well put.

@snaggletooth: Similarly, nice job addressing kneejerk comments on nj.com.

Thanks. I really just want to see the program succeed. If the kids were having fun playing what I consider a great game, things would be different. As it stands, they drive more kids to quit or transfer than any program should. And it's all in the way they treat the kids.

My child sees the AD in a similar light as the coach, FWIW.

One last thing: There was rumored to be a video of Fischetti being Fischetti at a baseball meeting this year. I'm told the coach got wind of it and made the kid delete it. As for phones during games, it's hard for kids who record this stuff in the dugout without being seen. And they frown on parents doing so, as well. That I know from personal experience.

+1. He's no better.

Funny, some of the comments on NJ.com. Essentially, coaches are never abusive - just old school.

I haven't even ventured to NJ.com. Always seems like a cesspool.

In that cave, 'mouthy' women probably 'ask for it', too. :-W

Time for 'trickle-down?' Why college and pro sports have not always offered great role models for coaches or players, hopefully the times are changing.

It should be noted that the vote was 7-1 with Ms. Wright voting down this and all the other resolutions that were up for a vote.

So, 7 voted to retain the coach and Ms. Wright dissented? If so, good for her.

I was told it was unanimous. If Ms. Wright dissented, good for her. But I don't think she did.

Go back and look - she voted no to everything that night except for passing the PARCC resolution. I was at most of the meeting & when not there watching it live.

So at least one person on the board, who happens to have actually been a coach, understood parents' complaints. Good to hear.

Amen to to Ms. Wright for doing the right thing!

We might actually have an independent thinker on the BOE! :O question

I believe the resolution addressed several other personnel allocations along with Mr. Fischetti's. I don't think any other one was publicly discussed, certainly not to the same extent, but it wasn't a vote purely on him.

Callista: earlier you stated that your child was not yet a student at Columbia. If that is so then how does your child have an opinion of the AD??

My child graduated from Columbia. I have 2 more that will go to CHS, one next Fall.

Still waiting for a former player who played under Fischetti as a varsity coach--as opposed to 2007 as a freshman coach--to voice support.

Tick. Tock.

Let me pose a hypothetical:

If virtually all the kids who played after Fischetti was a varsity coach stated under oath, on the condition of anonymity, that Fischetti commonly berates a player or the team generally as "pussies," "fags," and "gay" -- in front of other players and in locations such as on the practice field, on the field, on the bus, and in team meetings -- and assume this is his coaching/motivational style -- should Fischetti be permitted to retain his coaching position?
