Thanks for posting, jfburch. There’s a lot going on in there: neighborhood integration and school desegregation (which overlap but aren’t really the same, are they?); the apparently contrary implications of Johnson’s findings and the Ellen-Steil-De la Roca team’s conclusions.

If I went back in time to my Delaware district in the late ’70s and early ’80s, I wonder how the busing debate would strike me. At least one thing would stand out: My “local” high school was about as close to my home as West Orange High School is to Maplewood village (even though another suburban high school was half the distance away), so the arguments against travel time probably wouldn’t have made much of an impression.
