Is anyone watching Indian Summers on PBS?

Does anyone get a gay vibe from Ralph? That's the first thing I thought of when Cynthia was pushing Madeline on him..to quench any rumors. Maybe tryst with his son is what caused him to shoot Ralph?

Absolutely.

I wasn't sure what their relationship was to one another at first and then when I realized they were brother and sister I was shocked at how they greeted each other.
There was also a scene where Ralph was ogling her I appropriately.
And, Cynthia had to basically force Madeline on him to keep him fr appearing "unsteady" (which I took to mean that she thought he was gay.)
Interesting character development, nonetheless. (I'm thinking about the movie House of Yes.)

I have had all those thoughts about Ralph (gay, Adam's father, and so on). I was tring to give him the benefit of the doubt about his sister, but now I'm not sure. Ick.

(The "ick" was about Ralph and Alice, nothing else. I think Alice and Aafrin are going to hook up, too.)

Episode 5, very frenetic and packed with a lot of stuff. Found this episode lacking...

Anyone still watching?

I've been hanging in there, but this series hasn't caught my imagination the way Downton Abbey did, or other PBS/Masterpiece offerings of the past. I keep thinking there will come a point that things will look clearer and that (in retrospect) the pieces will all fall into place. In the meantime, Alice is annoying me soooo much! The production values are excellent, though, and I'm enjoying it as a chance to see a time and place in history that is a bit different for me.

eta: see my comment below - Sara is the character I can't stand, not Alice.

I'm following. Was there some reference to Ralph being both a mother and a father. I get the sense in some capacity he is very detached emotionally. Definitely an implication that he is gay. All of these characters are highly flawed, and unlike Downton, don't seem to try to draw you to them. Maybe the school teacher. I think the Indian characters seem somewhat more sympathetic....I find it interesting, but I like to be drawn to characters. This one leaves me more with curiosity at best.

I'm still watching!

Sometimes I'm slow, but since his mother brought him to Ralph, I'm guessing that Ralph is Adam's father?

And also- where is the evidence that Aafrin hid? Didn't the guards get it? I keep waiting for him to get in serious trouble because his girlfriend wouldn't deliver the message to his house.

And uh-oh about Madeline's parents no longer having money. I thought Cynthia was going to pee her pants when she found that out.

I find Alice very likable. Sara is horrid, though, just horrid.

I am definitely enjoying it and confess to skipping ahead via the Internet.

Stick with it. I am enjoying the plot twists and more background on the characters.

Sarah, whilst horrid, is such an interesting character and I think the actress playing her is amazing.

No, it is not Downton Abbey but I am enjoying it

Oh! My mistake! The character I don't like is the social-climbing, willing-to-blackmail doctor's wife (Sara), not Alice (the mysterious sister) - I like her. You can see I don't really identify much with these characters - I always get the names right on Downton Abbey!!! cheese

I think Aafrin's girlfriend has the certificate that was forged to create a link between Ralph's attacker and political lunacy. I have no idea why, though. She seems to be where things went astray when Alice went to deliver the message. Unless Aafrin's sister Sooni is lying about it, which seems unlikely.

Yes, it appears Ralph is Adam's father, although Adam's mother seems a bit ... Odd. Not to mention cruel to Adam. Something very off about that whole business.

What will Ralph do when he learns he has married a penniless woman he doesn't love, and who has figured out that he is much too fond of his sister? Messiness ahead!

RE: The Certificate

Ralph's people created a forged identification certificate linking the attacker to a radica Congress-sympathizing group with a history of carrying out terrorist attack against th British.

Aafrin found it when he was left alone during the inquest. He knew it was fake took it and hid it in his home.

A list of everyone at the inquest was made and a dinner was held at Ralph's residence so that police could search the homes of the suspects.

Aafrin sent Alice with the letter to give to Sita to bring to Sooni telling her to destroy it.

Alice didn't understand that Sita was not allowed to socialize with Aafrins family and entrusted her with the note. Sita was too scared to bring the note ton the family and didn't understand the gravity of its content.

Sooni never got the note and the certificate was found where Aafrin hid it.

Maybe, because Aafrin saved Ralph's life, he feels guilty about the forgery in the midst of Aafrin's bravery and humble demeanor, and has decided not to make an issue of it?

And the worst part of the last episode was Ralph's creepy twirling of Alice's hair with that look on his face. I mean, wtf. Alice bugs me but I can't put my finger on it.

I think Ralph will use the discovery to blackmail Aafrin.

I'm sure it will be something along those lines...

Regardless, Ralph and Aafrin's relationship is very interesting to watch; both need the other to "survive" and yet they are both so untrusting of the other. Perhaps it is a direct parallel to the whole political situation.

Does Ralph have the document? I saw a policeman find it, but he seemed to keep it to himself.

My favorite characters so far are the druken uncle's newphew and the Indian land owner. I hope they decide to work together.

The policeman still has it..

So, what does the policeman have in mind for that evidence if he hasn't turned it in and begun the official fuss???

An interesting plot twist is ahead.

Ahhhhhh... Someone has seen the rest, or read the book? No spoilers, please! wink

Episode 6, wow. What is the weirdness between brother and sister, Ralph and Alice, I wonder...

Is anyone else watching Home Fires? The show on 13 that precedes Indian Summers. Or am I the only person who watches shows when they are aired?

I am recording Home Fires but have not watched it yet.

I'm watching it. I'm a British television junkie, so I'm loving it. Does anyone watch Eastenders?

I am loving Home Fires! Great characters, good acting.

I'm enjoying "Indian Summers." It's not as powerful as "The Jewel in the Crown," at least according to my vague memory of that series. Although my memory is dim, I have a notion that this current show is more lurid and melodramatic, and therefore less relatable. All that Ralph lacks as a villain is a mustache to twirl. Even so, there are some wonderful performances -- including that of the actor who plays Ralph. I especially enjoy seeing veteran of countless tv shows and films, the wonderful Roshan Seth, as Aafrin's father. I'm also watching "Inspector George Gently," which is back with a seventh season after an hiatus. The interaction between Martin Shaw, who plays Gently, and Lee Inglesby, who plays his sergeant, Bacchus, is highly entertaining and well written. Reminds me of Inspector Morse and Sergeant Lewis, except the milieu is different in both time and place.

I just remembered that Tim Pigott-Smith, currently on Bway in "King Charles III," played a formidable villain in TJITC.

I love Aafrin's father! I keep fearing that he is going to die because they keep talking about how fragile he is, and then in the most recent episode he was ill. He is the sweetest man- I hope he makes it to the end of the series.

It was nice to see Sara and family have a nice moment.

Ralph seems to be becoming unhinged a bit- and it doesn't look like its going to get any better for him.

I wonder about Adam's mother... Was she quite right in the head??? She said and did such strange, sometimes cruel, things.

Elle_Cee, when is Gently on? Love that series!!!! The tension between him and Bacchus is a delight. And getting a sense of that time period, of my early adolescence, is eye opening for me.

I've been watching it on WLIW21, the NJ PBS station. Don't know if this search will come through, but here's a link: http://www.wliw.org/schedule/ It's on Saturdays at a weird time, 9:40 p.m. and repeats during the week. It's possible that you can also watch online at the link. In the latest episode, "Breathe in the Air," Lesley Nicol, who plays Mrs. Patmore in "Downton Abbey," appeared and gave a extremely moving performance. Earlier this year, I watched a number of the shows on Youtube. If anyone who's unfamiliar with the show wants to give it a try, I'd recommend starting at the beginning, as the central characters have an ongoing storyline that's worth following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s38PoZuitnU&list=PLMe-3u--86_2obxpx2QwrSjVDpVJCL8lP
