It’s a Philly Thing

My parents and a group of their close friends used to spend a weekend in Stone Harbor every summer. Except it turns out it was Avalon. Right on the line, but the couple who rented the house thought Stone Harbor sounded better. Because we all know what a dump Avalon is.

I haven’t been to Ocean City since I was 5 or 6 and got only about 10 feet into a boardwalk haunted house before running back out.

We did haunted mini golf this year. I can tell it was haunted, because the ghosts kept moving my ball so it wouldn't go in the hole.

Sounds above-paranormal.

Back on the question of hoagies, my Philadelphia-raised uncle-in-law claims the name comes from Hog Island. Wikipedia notes this theory as well:

Who has the best Philly cheesesteak in the area?
my go to has been Texas wieners or the Italian cheesesteak at the trattoria.

Excellent question. Wish I could help, but I’ve never ordered a cheesesteak in this area. Near the Port Authority, Shorty’s was fine, but I see now that it closed in June.

Where can you buy scrapple around here? Years ago I used to fry it and serve with a little maple syrup. May not be good for you.?

The ShopRite in Springfield always had two or three brands (Habbersett, Dietz & Watson, Rapa) when I used to shop there. That would be my first suggestion.

The Stop and Shop in South Orange, where I go now, used to carry a Brooklyn brand, but I haven’t seen it there in years. Given the old expiration dates that I’d notice now and then, I assume demand wasn’t strong enough to keep stocking it.

(My supplier is my dad, who brings a big block of scrapple from the Booths Corner Farmers Market, just north of the Delaware line, when he visits. I freeze it in slices, which last until the next visit.)

The next thing you’re gonna tell me is that Philadelphia cream cheese is a New York thing as well.

Ha!

Philly trying to one-up confederate flags in southern states with a newly discovered LARGISH grave marker for a WWII German SS soldier.  ADL none too pleased. Some local Ukrainians seems to be making weird excuses for it.

Am I the only one who is amused by going to "TEXAS wieners" for Philly Cheesesteaks? (They may be great, but it just seems strange to me.)

Re Texas Wieners, I'm here to tell you that there is absolutely no such thing in Texas (my home state.) The ONLY wiener/hot dog place I ever knew there was called "James Coney Island Hot Dogs" (Google just brought me to https://jamesconeyisland.com/ so it apparently still exists. There may have been other "Coney Island Hot Dog" places, I'm not sure, but definitely no Texas Wieners.

So I moved from Texas to the NYC metro area and was confronted with Texas Wieners instead of Coney Island Hot Dogs.

Conversely Brooklyners move here and pine for Brooklyn pizza and Brooklyn bagels.

Met a German girl in England who was going to school in France …

but apparently not Brooklyn Lobster.

Case study:  Business 101

1)  Open an up-price lobster restaurant in suburban New Jersey

2)  Name it after Brooklyn New York

3) Create a mental image of lobsters being fished out of the East River

4) Wait to take in crowds of local customers

5) Crowds are not taken in

Gowanus Lobster, with Newtown Scallops.

I always get my Scrapple from the Apple.

Hopefully this settles the mystery…

North Jersey pissing contests. Always amusing.

Ohio has no Taylor ham that I can see.

Can barely find liverwurst.

LOL

Down in Philly yesterday for a scouting event at the National Constitution Center. We got lunch at Reading Terminal market afterwards -- I did see scrapple on the menu at a few places but didn't try it, maybe next time. Reading Terminal is really fantastic, just walking around in there is a treat.

My family’s favorite Philly spot. If the timing ever works for you, the Amish merchants kick it up another notch on the weekdays and Saturdays when they appear.
