The Shortest
Day
by Susan Cooper
So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen,
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing, behind us - listen!
All the long echoes sing the same delight
This shortest day
As promise wakens in the sleeping land.
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends, and hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year, and every year.
Welcome Yule!
I voted! Love Damariscotta (as well as some other towns in Maine but I didn't see them on the list anyway, so it was a no-brainer!)
Beautiful video, probably by filmed by drone. Great colors and soothing music.
Wondering if Damariscotta won that Down East contest. Just noticed that Cape Elizabeth was in the first round - we have friends there and have been promising to get up that way for a few years now. Some day!

Kismet, is that a hearth in the picture's background? if so, does it heat well? it is very attractive. If so, who is the manufacturer?
ps I love the dog pic too.
It's a Hampton insert...we love it. Pretty much heated our house (2300 sq ft) this winter (used a tiny, (really tiny) amount of oil vs last year...of course milder winter and oil prices down but still). Think it has 3 burn chambers, it has hi and lo fan settings, easy to clean the glass...one of the best things we've done with this old house(1850) so far....
I am going to seriously consider that option for my new house. This is the one, right? http://www.regency-fire.com/Products/Hampton-Wood-Gas/Cast-Iron-Stoves,-Fireplaces---Inserts/HI300.aspx Energy is extremely expensive here in Chile, but there is lots of wood everywhere. I installed a hearth in my new house rental, and I love it. It is not bad looking, but I like yours better for the house which I am going to build.
