Looking for a Psychiatrist that specializes in anxiety

I'm also looking for a psychiatrist/psychologist for a family member going through anxiety.  But virtually every post here talks about drugs.  Is that normal?  Are there any local psychiatrists who try to treat problems without prescribing drugs?

Generally, if a person wants therapy more than drugs, psychologists are more thoroughly trained and specialize in it much more than psychiatrists these days, and their fees are lower.

Great response, thanks.

My friend tried Miller...found him to be half a$$ed...never did a good assessment (which is actually common that they don't)....misdiagnosed....didn't monitor for side effects...seemed disinterested.  Also tried Park...+++++5 minutes+++++ into the 1st appointment he told her that she was too sick for him to treat and she needed a day program..Tried one in Montclair...never guessing a psychiatrist didn't ever prescribe meds....maybe the doc should have said that when she made the appointment.....anyway..she went, talked to the doc for an hour and then was told the doc never prescribed meds--only did talk therapy (i don't know the name--only that it was an older woman)....She is just starting a new one this week-.

On a side note...there are geriatric psychiatrists who should be more aware of side effects in older patients...

usually it is the psychologists, LCSW (therapists) who treat mental illness/anxiety through therapy (instead of or in addition to)...most psychiatrists only prescribe meds and don't do therapy.

Dr. Danni Michaeli, South Orange.

Psychiatrists are for the medicine. Therapists are for the symptoms, in this case anxiety. Is the person an adult or child/adolescent? A lot of therapists work with anxiety. oops...I didn't see the other responses before I posted.

I think all the psychiatrists handle medication for anxiety. Just go to whomever your insurance takes--probably someone at 741 Northfield. There are a herd of them there. If you want someone really good, you might have to go out of network.

This is an old thread! (2012).  I think many of these psychs have now moved.  But I still feel the same way.  Get meds from a psychiatrist and then see a psychologist for dealing with the anxiety long-term.

Here are some psychologists who have helped me.

Mim Walden, South Orange (973) 313-9785  (a friend--but she worked with me on specific techniques for anxiety.  Has specialized training in that.)

Meryl Dorf, West Orange (862) 324-7025  (great therapist)

Psychiatrist: Sandra Wulach in Short Hills

Susan Gimbar is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and can write scripts as well as use talk therapy.
